How well do merchant's overall conversion rate apply to individual affilates?

For example, if a merchant claims they convert 1 in every 40 visitors, how well is that likely to hold true for individual affiliates provided they get well targeted traffic?

I think it entirely depends on where the traffic for that product is coming from. If it's cold traffic or "warm" traffic, if you've written a good pre-sell review before the visitor clicks on the vendor's sales page or if the traffic is going directly to the sales page (through your affiliate link).

The only real way to know is to test your own traffic with the commissions coming in from that product. A great way to increase sales as an affiliate is by offering bonus packages to everyone who purchases through your affiliate link.

It means nothing... starting out you will most likely not hit the 1 in 40 or eCPC numbers they provide. After you push tons of conversions and optimize, and depending on your traffic source, then maybe you can.

Big affiliates with super tight game hit those numbers, someone doing a handful of conversions a day probably will not hit those numbers. Not impossible, just not likely.

Plus even the tightest operation, you can't compare PPC numbers to CPV for example... obviously PPC needs a higher conversion rate than CPV for the campaigns to be equal due to cost differences.
