How do I check out a china manufacturer?

Hi,

I'm look at placing a fairly substantial order with a chinese manufacturer. I have approached a couple that have offered me a reasonable price but I want to make sure they won't sell me dodgy good etc... I got stung a few years back buying an item that had been altered to mis-represent the memory size.

Any advice on checking them out?

Thanks

Don't think that if foolproof. Last time I got 5 genuine memory sized items then 1000 fake ones.

I have heard about this scam before. That is why some people prefer to deal only with registered companies in Hong Kong or Taiwan who carries out their manufacturing in China.

    Some options...

    Start small.
Ask for references, and check them.
    Visit them.

Go to the forums of alibaba.com and do a search on "due dilligence". From what I read there the only possibility is to go over there yourself or pay somebody to check your order right before it is shipped. There are companies who specialize in that service.

I did some import from Nepal with good results, but it was a small manufacturer and I did check them out before placing the order and sending money.

    Good luck!

Importing from china can be very lucrative.

However, there are a lot of con artists (as in any place) so you must do your due diligence before placing an order with them.

When i was into importing in a big way for ebay sales at the beginning we were stung by the con artists.

    Here are some tips:

    1) Buy in some samples to test the product before the big order (this is not always going to ensure a legit supplier as they can send fakes in the real order but gives you a head start)

    2) Check alibaba to see if they have feedback (if they are there)

    3) Ask for references and contact the companies that buy from them.

    4) Pay for the goods by Letter of Credit.

Importing can give you high returns but you must do your due diligence beforehand. Once you have a list of reliable suppliers you could turn it into a small fortune.

Hope that helps and good luck.

I have a partner which I know personally that lives in China (I used to live in China). For a small fee, I'll have him get on the train to go check out the manufacturer and speak with them and he can give you an honest review on everything he see's and the information he can gather.

I still don't see how it's relevant. From your acronyms I guess it was a joke.

          ......... queue tumble weed ...........

          Good one.

Regarding checking out the manufacturers, In the end I found a company called KRT inspect who will go to manufacturer for a daily rate and test out quality of goods and inspect shipment. They then send you photo's and a report. They can also do background checks etc..

to say a china manufacturer is to say a manufacturer of certain ceramic materials....

chi⋅na  /ˈtʃaɪnə/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [chahy-nuh] Show IPA
            Use China in a Sentence
            See web results for China
            See images of China
-noun 1. a translucent ceramic material, biscuit-fired at a high temperature, its glaze fired at a low temperature.
            2. any porcelain ware.
            3. plates, cups, saucers, etc., collectively.
            4. figurines made of porcelain or ceramic material, collectively: a collection of china.
            5. Chiefly Midland and Southern U.S. a playing marble of china, or sometimes of porcelain or glass.

            -adjective 6. made of china.
            7. indicating the twentieth event of a series, as a wedding anniversary
Now if you said CHINESE manufacturer, or a manufacturer IN china, that would be entirely different.

Oh well.....Tumble weed blows the other way down a quiet dusty dirt street.

Sorry I didn´t get back earlier, I just now saw this post again... I don't really remember what were the steps I took, but I rembember calling the company in the middle of the night to see if somebody really answered the phone...

But I found a lot of useful things about this topic on the forums of Alibaba, it really is the right place if you want to educate yourself in this field.

              Good luck again, Geolina

There is a For Dummies book on dealing with China contacts called "Doing Business in China for Dummies".

I haven't bought this so I have no idea if it's any good, but it's only $15 at Amazon.

I think you'd better get a little orders to see whether they are with good quality. Then you can decide whether it's necessay for you to cooperate with them further.Sometimes, trust is very important.Absolutely, you can't promise anything foolproof when doing business with others.

Hi Bev, that is a kind offer. They are in Ningbo, is that close to your frinds?

I also have friends in China but they are very far away from Ningbo.

The minimum order for the item I want is 50 which is a couple thousand bucks. Not a lot really but i'm not working right now so its more of a big deal.
