Hi all,

I know this is probably going to sound like a really silly question but like I said im new to all this so I dont know.

I keep seeing adverts saying people are making money with their blogs, well I will admit that I have no idea what one is, can someone please tell me?

Please try and keep the terms simple as it doesnt take a lot to get me mixed up

Thanks it means a lot

Sarah

Very simply a blog is a weblog.

Blog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nothing wrong with simple questions - but google is a great tool. After you understand what a blog is, use the advanced search function here to look for "blog" in thread titles and you can start learning how to use them.

It is just like your personal information. But some are using it to earn money.

The personal blog, an ongoing diary or commentary by an individual, is the traditional, most common blog. Personal bloggers usually take pride in their blog posts, even if their blog is never read by anyone but them. Blogs often become more than a way to just communicate; they become a way to reflect on life or works of art. Blogging can have a sentimental quality. Few personal blogs rise to fame and the mainstream, but some personal blogs quickly garner an extensive following. A type of personal blog is referred to as "microblogging," which is extremely detailed blogging as it seeks to capture a moment in time. Sites, such as Twitter, allow bloggers to share thoughts and feelings instantaneously with friends and family and is much faster than e-mailing or writing. This form of social media lends to an online generation already too busy to keep in touch.

    Hi doglover

the term blog is short for 'weblog' where people originally started keeping a log (or diary) of thoughts, ideas, topics of interest, as a series of postings. So there is a diary or log style format to a blog.

It has got more commercial over the years, but the format is still pretty much the same. Many people use their blog as an extra sales tool that compliments their commercial website.

As an example, I'm guessing one of your areas of interest is pets (dogs in particular), so you might have an online petstore as a business. e.g www myonlinepetstore . com (note - not a real site). Then as an aside you might have a blog page set up at something like www mypuppytrainingblog . com, where you regularly (say daily or weekly), post what's been happening whilst you've been training your puppy. You'd probably include a mix of serious hints and tips, plus some funny stories and maybe ask readers to contribute too.

It's a good way to build a rapport with people who have a similar interest or who are having a similar experience.

The benefits to your petstore business are twofold. You can advertise your own site and recommend your own products, and because your blog readers like you, they are likely to buy from you. Plus, you can get SEO benefits from having backlinks from your blog site to your commercial site.

    Cheers

Simple answers like these can be found on wikipedia or by searching on google. I'm not saying that it's wrong to post here, but some stuff can be found on google if you type "what is (Phrase)"

    Sarah,

While others have provided good resources for you let me chime in on this statement, "I keep seeing adverts saying people are making money with their blogs." The truth is not everyone is making money with their blog. It takes work, some planning and effort.

Be careful to not spend any money until you are absolutely sure you know what you want to do online. And even then you should hold on tight to your wallet and don't fall for hype.
