numbers in urls - what seo effect do they have

Hi Everyone,
I'm Ian and I wonder if anyone out there has experienced or tried the effect of a domain name with a number (digit) included when it comes to search against keywords that do not have the digit included. I'll do my best to explain.
For example, if I wanted to promote a product that was called 'the toy store' and the vendors sales page was w ww.thetoystore.com I might want to make things easy for me by using w ww.thetoystore.net or .org as a promo page with my affiliate link on and I would like to use 'the toys store' as my keyword so I got a showing when people searched for 'the toy store'. Lets say these (.net, .org etc) have gone, as is often the case. I wondered if anyone has experience of introducing a digit, say '1', into the domain. So I used w ww.thetoystore1.com and I applied the keyword 'the toy store' to this website. What affect does that number have on the way google would view the relevance of my website in a competitive search keyword area.

I think I'll be doing my own trials, but I have to ask first. Someone may be good enough to set me straight on it.

Have a great day
Ian
