It depends on a few things...

Do you have any capital to invest in traffic? As already mentioned, buying solo ads...

Do you have a funnel in place?

If you have a funnel in place that converts then ideally you could build your list for free as you would recover advertising costs by selling one time offers to people who opt in to your list.

Then, there is the free way.

Set up a squeeze page and drive traffic to it doing things like forum posting, blog commenting, article writing... BUT, what you have to realize is that these free things will cost you as well... they cost you your time.

  • Yes you'll need an autoresponder, most here will recommend either aWeber or GetResponse (though there are self-hosted options as well, depending on how tech savvy you are). But The most popular way to build a list in my eyes is to first figure out who would benefit from what you have to offer. Consider the problem you are trying to solve. It might sound cliche but your list should be made up of people who have a specific issue and turn to you to solve it. A rabid fan base so to speak.

If you base your decisions around who you want to help, it will drive your list building efforts (as well as how you craft your follow-up messages). People will see that you're sincere and you'll have a better list. It might be smaller, but should be far more active in terms of conversion.

That's the most important thing in my eyes. Next of course would be your budget. You can certainly get things moving quickly via paid traffic, but here too, you have to figure out the best form based on your previous goal: PPC, PPV, something else? And with these types of traffic, you should know what you're doing or you can lose far more than you bring in rather quickly. If you do, great! If not, then stick with organic traffic.

You can build your list with a lot of methods. My favourite is buying PPC traffic and drive it to my Squeeze page where people will opt in.

But the avarge ppc lets say for "loss fat" niche cost around 0.60-1.00
and lets say half of the people will opt in this will be like you pay one dollar for each opt in.

True, but if you can earn even $.20 per subscriber per month, you're profitable in 5 months.

I combine free and paid methods. I don't have the best funnels in place yet, but it's still all worth it. My free methods are forums, blogging and YouTube traffic (I also pay for YouTube views via YT Adwords). I also pay for press releases (PR Web - I got a subscription), which delivers traffic for a surprisingly long time after the release.

Banner ads on select websites can work well. I've had one very good success and a few stinkers. I had the best luck choosing the site myself and negotiating with the site owner. My bad results were using the buysellads service.

The most popular way is probably to put up a squeeze page, attract SEO traffic to it, and use something not-too-special as the incentive.

That's rarely the best way, and pretty often it's a poor way that results in a very unresponsive list and low open-rates, but I think it must be the most popular way.

When you're dealing with a specific field of self-employment in which the overall success-rate is very low (and whoever's figures you believe, I think that's a pretty non-contentious assertion, in this context?), then more or less by definition, the most popular way of doing something is almost never going to be the best way, is it?

But when you see people here trying to convince others (but quite often really trying to convince themselves) that "a 15% open-rate is normal, in this industry", you'll typically be looking at a post made by someone who has built their lists (a) through a squeeze page, (b) from SEO traffic, and (c) with a second-best incentive which wasn't specifically created to establish credibility, brand themselves and maximize their open-rates.

it's a pretty vague question but in general this is what i did

    1. created a good free gift
    2. created a good paid product
    3. marketed my squeeze page in lots of areas on the web and also used my IM blog to build my list too.
    4. Once you know roughly what you are doing buy some paid traffic
    5. Look at your conversions and EPC and see how you can improve them
    6. Once you know your numbers and you ave a good funnel you can buy tonnes more traffic and make a lot more money

The most popular or the most effective? The former, there's no realistic way to measure this and the latter, well that would be based on your own testing within your own business(es).

Have a freebie to give away.
Create one yourself (e-book, short report, MP3, video)
Create an opt in form or squeeze page and wire it to an autoresponder such as Aweber.
Get traffic by buying a solo ad or two.
When visitors come to your squeeze page they opt in and you then send them to a page where they can download the freebie. On the download page add other offers to make you money.
Follow up with your list with good content......don't simply send out offers.

Solo ads, in my opinion is the easiest way. Paid advertising is easy. You pay somebody else to drive traffic to your offer. Cheapest way is to post your offer to free forums and social media like Facebook. That's free.

Using poll and survey work very well. You either have the poll, survey or quiz on your blog page or stand alone page. Send traffic to it.

The most popular way to build a list is a relative term. Everybody is a little different. It's going to depend on what's actually working for you at the time. If you're a newbie trying to get your feet wet, then you wouldn't want to start out in paid advertising. You'll go broke quick, fast and in a hurry.

On the other hand, if you're wanting to test the waters, you've come to the right place to learn. Once you learn more about marketing your niche (weight loss/fat loss), then it's just a matter of implementing what you've picked up. I must say that you are in a very competitive niche and that's why your PPC is high.

I would suggest you jump onto a few of your top weight loss blog forums and get involved in the conversation, provide good quality and valuable content (feedback) for the group. That way if you do have a squeeze page or blog up relative to your niche, you can drive targeted traffic back to your site for FREE.

If that traffic is converting, then and only then you might want to consider some paid traffic methods. Oh and by the way, all the other things the posters above said you need, I took into consideration that you already knew about squeeze pages, autoresponders, and hosting, etc. Hope this helps.

Well first of all, you need a squeeze page that captures the names and addresses of your visitors. You will also need email software. You should probably use Aweber. And lastly you need to give something away for free in xchange for the persons name and email address. So find a plr report or just something you can giveaway for free. If you do give away PLR make sure you check the license first to see if you can in fact give it away. You can get in big trouble if you don't.
