have you sold a site with a basic wordpress theme, (for a lack of a better word) or a theme that wasn't custom, if so how much did you get out of it, and did people question you about it any? im in the process of selling a site that I just ranked and that is the main value that I want the buyer to see.

I was going to get a custom theme created for it tho so it's worth more.

    The sites I have bought in the past, I have usually changed the theme or customized it more to my liking. So it shouldn't matter too much if it is already making money.

    Someone with experience buying sites, should be able to see the value in it.

    Do you mean creating sites for local, offline clients? If so, the a big YES. There are so many themes out there, no one except for a WordPress developer knows which theme is which. Obviously, you customize it with the clients pictures and copy, change some colors but other than that, I use an off-the-shelf WP theme.

    Now that is for a small business. If I was developing for a bigger company with a much bigger budget, then it may be a good time to getting into a custom theme.

    I deal almost exclusively with small local businesses, salons, antique shops, pizzerias, etc. so I generally grab a theme from Elegant Themes or InkThemes and roll with that.

    it's mainly to sell on flippa, I noticed they ask you when selling your site if the design is custom.

    i'm hoping the buyer see's value in the rankings alone, as well as the money that it has made consistently.

    I thought about saying if they buy at the buy it now price I will design them a custom theme based on there business.

    I don't buy custom themes for selling on Flippa. I do buy high quality commercial themes, but not custom themes. It isn't necessary.
