(newb) Is Alexa important?

Hey Warriors -

I'm new to IM (Feb '13) and have been slowly building my site. I'm getting some traffic which is good considering I've only manually submitted the site to Google and Yahoo so far.

I've done some research on Alexa and have visited the site, but there's something about it that just doesn't sit well with me. Is it as important as it seems? What's your opinion?

Thanks for your time.
Chris

Alexa rankings are based upon traffic you get,the more traffic you get the higher ranking you get,So,I don't think its that much important

An Alexa ranking is handy to have but it is not something you should worry about. If it comes great, if not don't worry

This is what many believe, but it isn't actually so, Aashish: they're based on the traffic you get from users of the Alexa toolbar. That's the only traffic they can measure, if you think about it? They don't have access to the sites' "analytics".

No - actually it works the other way round: the more traffic you get (comprising members of their toolbar), the lower your ranking is: sites with the lowest Alexa numbers are those with the most Alexa toolbar-user traffic.

      You got that part right!

I used to use Alexa (dot com) as some sort of measurement of a website's worth.

I quickly found out that it's meaningless.

For example, my domain gets about 4,000 unique visitors per month and my Alexa ranking is 160,000ish.

I know many people's blogs that get way more than 4k uniques that have a ranking of 250k or higher. That's not to mention any other squeeze or landing pages they have.

    It's just not consistent enough.

Google Analytics is a much better tool for measuring your site's progress.

      There you go.

I have a site that pulls in between 10k to 15k (thousands) per DAY, and it's ranking is mid-300,000 LOL But my site is possibly one that no one without the Alexa toolbar would visit.

I laugh when some spammer asks me to place a dofollow linked banner (above the fold) on my site for $50/month based on his "research metrics" of my site (i.e. went and had a look at my Alexa ranking). More than once I've replied, "you for real, fool?".

Just tried it out a few non-webmaster sites of mine that are getting a few thousnad visitors per day, and the the ranks are in the millions, up to several million...

On the other hand, sites which get a few tens or hundreds of visitors per day (i.e.10X to 100X less) have significantly higher Alexa rankings.

I stopped paying attention to Alexa ratings years ago. I can get traffic stats from my tracking and analytics software (I don't use Google Analytics, I don't want them spying on my website), my server logs, etc.

It's ONE thing to look at, but I wouldn't put much weight into their figures, rankings, etc.

What makes Alexa is important is that you could use them as your metric of success.

It would be an absolutely bizarre "metric of success", though!

Call me unimaginative, but I'm really struggling to try to envisage a meaning of the word "success" such that that could possibly measure it in any meaningful or helpful way at all!

Why not use money paid in to the bank as your "metric" (if you're running a business)?

Alexa is inaccurate. There are much better alternatives, like Quantcast. It's free and provides incredibly valuable demographic information.

It is, if you're looking to scam someone on Flippa.

I wouldn't give it too much weight.

However, I like to browse through it to find sites that I at least know are getting traffic.

It has given me a few good niche ideas.

Alexa isn't that important to me. The reason behind this is because you can rank well in alexa using some dumb fake visitor tools. Alexa is only important when trying to sell a website. But until then, there's no hidden rank factor about it.
