OT, bandwidth questions

I need some help and since there are a lot of computer savvy people here, I'd like to ask a couple of questions.

Our website had been working fine until we added in a forum. We were immediately hit with spammers who did manage to infiltrate it and fill it with crap. We got that cleaned up and got it set up so a potential member has to get past me first, meaning I get an email saying this person wants to join. We have deleted all of them because you can tell by their user names they are spammers, lots of weird letters with two numbers at the end, all of them are like that. So, there are just a few members, who are legit.

We keep running out of bandwidth which of course means our site is blocked to everyone. Not good for sales. Our domain host has increased the bandwidth three times now and today we exceeded our limit again. The site is now up and running, and the domain guy is looking into what's going wrong that this keeps happening.

My web design person is going to take the forum down for now. We had no problems before we put it up, so I think starting there is a good thing. A friend has suggested our site has been hacked and is being used by someone for some nefarious purpose. Is this likely? If so, what do we do about it?

I am rather frustrated that it's taking too long for my liking to have the forum come down and to get some answers as to what the problem is. I've been googling but not getting anywhere, so I thought maybe someone here would have some ideas for me.

Thanks in advance,
Funkynassau

I'm guessing it's automated bots that are doing that...
If you can find out who they are you can make it easier to get rid of them.

There are also plugins that allow you to have exclusion ranges for IP addresses, so naughty people are not allowed to access the site, and do not cause the problems that you're having.

I think they are automated bots too but how do I figure out where they are coming from? I feel like I am out of my league with this one!

You have some spam bots abusing of your forum.

I had the same experience a few years ago, this is really hard to fight against them because they are designed to spam the free forum programs.

What I did on those days was to change to VBulletin.

Even though you limited registration on your forum to be pre-approved before being added or adding posts... the bots are still hitting the forum and attempting to register and/or post. This still generates use of traffic (both up and down). Ideally you would block the bot's IP range (if it is limited, to say, a class C) at the firewall level so it wouldn't count on your bandwidth at all.

    Best of luck.

you could talk to your hosting company, get a hosting plan with unlimited bandwith. They aren`t that expensive.

Thanks for the replies. The domain host is looking into what's sucking up the bandwidth. In the meantime we are going to take the forum down. Can anyone tell me if I remove the forum from the menu, will that stop them, or is it more involved than that? Ideally I'd like to keep the forum in the background in case we want to use it down the road, assuming we can stop these guys.

Monitor your server for changes or/and additions of new files and you can find the culprits!

By the way, what "menu" do you mean?
