Landing page email question

I'm using a landing page to collect email addresses, once they've entered it they are forwarded to another page that invites them to play one of many games. I'm working in a games niche.

I'm storing the email addresses, name, and location in a database. I write the software myself.

Are there companies that will mailshot the email addresses from my database? Or is it possible to do it myself without hitting the spam box?

Check out Aweber, it is the answer you are looking for.

What you are looking for is called an auto-responder.

Aweber is opt-in. I'm not looking for opt-in subscribers.

People putting their email addresses into a box (and thereby giving you permission to send them email) is "opt-in". You're already opting people in. An autoresponder service is what you need to communicate with those people. Such a service also has custody of the database (but you can export it and back-up, of course, because it's your "list").

The alternative (to an autoresponder service) is to use a self-hosted autoresponder instead. That way, you're sending the emails out yourself. Their deliverability may not be as good, and in the event of any complaints, it will be your internet connection, domain-registration and hosting account exposed to all the risk-factors associated with that, rather than those of the autoresponder service.

For many businesses, self-hosted autoresponder tools/software can be a perfectly satisfactory solution, but they do tend to require considerably more technical expertise than using an autoresponder service of the GetResponse/Aweber type.

If I understand your question correctly you may want to try "tectite formmail". It is free and I use it on several client sites.

No that's not what I meant bud.

The form is not the issue. I have the landing page set up, I'm collecting email addresses as we speak. I now want to email all those users in my database.

Yes I agree Alexa. You definitely need to go with a paid autoresponder service because they provide excellent back office support and training. In your back office you can do a lot tracking of your clicks, conversions, open rates and any technical issues will be handled by them. The only issue is the actual cost which depends on the amount of subscribers you have on your list. The 2 major companies that provides these services are Aweber and getresponse and I have both.

The last time I used Aweber it forced me to create an autoresponse to confirm an opt-in. Is this still the same?

I am currently managing my own mail. I use TheBat to send out emails, but even with whitelisted IP's some can hit the spam box. This is what I'm trying to avoid.

@Alexa, some great advice thank you.

Some emails landing in the spam folder is always going to happen no matter what system you use. I use a self hosted autoresponder AutoResponse Plus, which has worked very well for me. They have a new version now called Arp Reach which allows you to send mail through third party mail servers.

There are a few things you can do to improve deliverability if using your own server. Make sure the domain sending mail has a dedicated IP address. Enable SPF Records and DKIM. (You will see these options in cPanel under Mail)

If you have Hotmail clients, Join Microsofts SDNS program and also their Junk Email Reporting Program.

Even after all this, some mail can be labelled as spam if the receiving address has aggresive filters in place. There's not much you can do about that.

Aweber allows single opt-in lists to be built.

But if you're importing a previously-built list, they may well require you to start with just an opt-in confirmation request: they normally prefer to do this, to protect themselves and their other customers from people who would otherwise try to use the service to send out bulk unsolicited email ("spam").

You can check out PHPList to see if it meets your needs.
