How much to have DIY manual made?

Hi. I have been thinking of having a freelancer create a PDF file for a DIY project. The objective is to have a manual to sell online. I am thinking of starting off with a well detailed and illustrated go cart building plan. I like to make sure that I have enough money for a good project before I post on a freelancer website.

About how much budget would I need for a project like this?

    If you want a very well developed product, I'd say at least $500. You might be able to get it as cheap as $250, depending on the length and the amount of expertise required by the writer.

    Do you want an expert in go-carts to write the book?
    Or will you supply research and an outline and they simply have to write it?
    Or, will they need to do all the research themselves?

    Also, will you have the images, or will they have to be procured also? There could be costs associated with licensing the images.

    And you'll still need graphics and copy to sell it as well.

    How many words, are graphics involved, do you need a tech writer or just a good writer.
    Do you need an ecover, so many variables in this.

    I have paid as low as 399 for 30,000 words and I have paid as high as 1000 for 40,000 words.

    I could spend only a 100 on 30,000 words but either it won't be up to par or I will get lucky and get a newby that can write and just needs the feedback. I don't want to chance it.

    I will definitely go with DanielleS statement. First you have to decide what kind of product you want to make. It will be well developed product or as a normal one? If you want to make a well developed product the $ 500 is enough. But three questions which DanielleS have asked you need to clear them. May be we can give you a more clarifications or ideas after getting the answer of these three questions.
