How to start in Internet marketing with nothing....or less than nothing!

A few times in my conferences with others, I've been asked the question....

"How can I get started with affiliate marketing/list building/video marketing when I don't have anything?"

I will tell you that it's ok to start with nothing but you need to hold off on your IM focus until you have some daily cash flow. Yes, you can get a job but I will share with you now how to earn cash faster with more flexible time. In doing so, you will be able to get going with ANY IM method that looks appealing to you.

This works for anyone and many people end up enjoying the results that they keep doing this even after they've established a good financial base to operate from.

Here's exactly what you need to do....

Grab a pad of paper and a pen and I want you to start looking at the small business and household services on Craigslist. For this exercise, select as many areas as you want....The more, the better!

Now I want you to go through the posts and I want you to look at them from the perspective as if you were a potential customer, ok?

As you go through them, I want you to note ANY service advertisement that stands out as different or unique. Here's what I mean...

You've probably seen hundreds of house cleaning ads. Other than variations in areas serviced or rates, the essence of the ad is the same. It is a house cleaning service. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Now, all of a sudden you see an ad that specializes in household clutter cleanup where the house cleaner will come in and in less than 24 hours will clean out the entire house, remove all of the clutter piles and make it sparkle.

This was interesting as the unique angle which was clutter removal as well as immediate results would be very appealing to people whose homes are just filled to the brim with unwanted stuff, resulting in a very dirty, unattractive home.

I called up this house cleaner and she and her crew were so busy just from their free ads on Craigslist.

Their service stood out and because of that, people flocked to them.

So start looking at ads and jot down ANY service that stands out as different or unique. Go through and ask yourself, "Is this service typical or is there something about it that stands out?"

It could be a service that you never heard of. Or, it could be a small twist in one of the bulleted point features. In any event, your mission is to jot down 5-10 of these ads and print them off for future reference.

Many of these businesses take very little money upfront to start. If you need some upfront money, I suggest either selling some of your possessions or ask friends/family for a short term loan.

Most of these businesses will be happy to share with you how they operate so call them up and take notes. You have their ad copies so all you need to do is rewrite/create your own copy to run your own ad. Chances are very good that you will be the ONLY one providing such a service with a unique angle.

The clutter cleanup service brings in $200-$400 every day. How long would it take for you to build up a nice cushion at this rate?

About 5% of the advertised services on CL have a strong enough USP that they will appeal to new customers with each ad they run.

You just have to hustle but as long as you have the time, you can see success very quickly so you can have the money and time to pursue any IM venture....or any other business, for that matter.

One more suggestion.....

As you start to make money and have the ability to devote to other opportunities, pick up a copy of "Your Secret Wealth" by Jay Abraham and you will then be able to expand on your value detecting and value delivery abilities just like what was mentioned above that people will gladly pay you for.

I would advice newbies to go to Yahoo answers because they do not have to write 500 word article instead short answers with few words will work for them.

  • Hi Michael Franklin,

I very much enjoyed reading your article post here. However as with almost any post, no answers can solve every problem? You say sell your possessions which assumes someone asking how to start an online business for nothing has things of second hand value that they can do without to sell? I always think such people are virtually potless?

Also to run say a house cleaning and re-modelling service would require the minimum of two people, some equipment, transport such as a car or van, some basic skills and knowledge about which cleaning solutions are safe to use and on what? Also public liability insurance, more advertising costs, because Craigslist may not work as well for everyone? Also leaflets to distribute, business cards and so on? Then also some health and safety rules to discover as well?

For someone wanting to start an online business, these expenses alone would already be a lot more than starting a business online with say affiliate marketing?

All IM skills are learnable and the initial costs of getting started are only around say $25 for the first month plus the cost of traffic generation if results are needed fast? Otherwise there are lots of ways to get free traffic and only the learning will require more additional money to be invested?

However it was a great read with lots of very useful ideas which will help some people to raise some cash to get started in some type of business which I agree is always better than any stupid minimum waged job. It should make more of us think outside of the box?

    Regards,

    Stephen & Jennifer.

      Hi guys!

My point is that when you are in a tight bind, you are much better off getting your cash flow going ASAP. With some basic upfront research, you can be earning money in a matter of days as you are copying others' winning game plans.

In the example I gave, your expenses are very minimal upfront. Furthermore, you also have the option of using any assets and borrowing against them so you often can get back your collateral within days as these businesses are good cash flow businesses with no wait.

When every day counts you dont want any wait time that often comes with getting paid after affiliate promotion via PPC.

Mindset is everything and just seeing quick results will do wonders as you start to proceed into IM opportunities while no longer being worried about financially surviving the day.

It takes around $60 in my experience, domain name and year's worth of hosting and maybe a few WSO's

I agree with you Michael, it's difficult but not impossible, and the advice that you gave is great. I think that hosting and at least a domain name is needed, but your advice about looking at the Craiglist Ads and how they stand out it's a good idea to start the marketing.

      Thanks for the good words!

I don't believe in reinventing the wheel. So with your marketing costs being nil then all you got to do is attract the eyeballs....And having a business that stands out will yield great results!

IM for a low cost every month.

Absolutely! What I'm just pointing out that when time is of the essence, this approach will help give you better peace of mind and FAST money. As a result, you can focus BETTER on any IM method.

So many people go into IM feeling defeated due to tough circumstances and winning the mental game is SO key!

Those books are all excellent! I would add "Getting Everyhing You Can Out Of All You Got" and "The Sticking Point Solution" both by Jay Abraham which both go into detail on many of the principles of "Your Secret Wealth" audio.

      Hey Michael,

Nice post bro! Services are an easy way to start offline or online. Yes, one trades time for money but then you got to do that at some point in time. Once the safety net or the cushion as you say it is built then the big jump becomes so much easier. Inspiring post indeed.

      Cheers

If you have nothing to invest, then article/content writing are good options to start with, you can write for other people and also write an ebook and sell it too. If one knows web designing, it also has a high demand.

Ya writing is a valuable skill, no doubt. Also being able to create content in other mediums like video and audio are very useful. The key is leveraging your skills to create high quality content, and then outsourcing what you cannot do. Avoid trying to learn and do everything yourself.

To leverage some IM skills, create a lead site utilizing those various techniques and sell the leads to the local services. No need to trade time for money in actually doing the local service.
