I make Fantastic Videos for People.. but how do I market them outside of Fiverr?!

Hi Forum!

I was recommended to this forum by a friend - he said you guys might be able to help me.

I am an actress, and I started making spokesperson presentation videos for people on Fiverr, and though I'm now a 'Top Rated Seller', I feel like I've outgrown the site.

My videos are much better than those of my competitors, and people keep telling me that I should expand outside of Fiverr.. but I don't really know how to begin getting any sort of client base.

I just put up my new website, but where do I go from here?? How do I get people to find me?

Any help would be appreciated!

Get a facebook page, at least. You can put the link in your about me part of your public profile here, I think. Don't take this the wrong way, but since you described yourself as an actor, you will understand 'looks' in your profession. You are an attractive lady. Dudes are going to click on your public profile page to see a bigger picture of you (I am sure you have a portfolio with a protrait?). You can offer up your facebook page link when they do that, which they will if you post here a couple times a day ...

The same people that buy and offer gigs at fiverr hangout here. So, merely interacting with people in threads can get you work, sometimes from folks with a lot more than five bucks to spend ...

I am not trying in anyway to engage in a critique; however, there was a bit of visual creativity and technicalities that were absent on the three vids on your page. A certain visual experience that was missing and could be enhanced. Consider it not a critique, but as a personal compliment and suggestion to raise the base technical and artistic level of the video up to your actor talent level.

And I want to mention that since you have a green screen, I have bookmarked your site. I have several thousand dollars worth of video/graphic/audio software, but I have a face and acting abilities better suited for hiding behind a keyboard and monitor, where my creativity can be expressed.

Perhaps you can use that to your advantage somehow? A different customer stream - higher end (creatively and technically) video creators/producers that could incorporate you and your green screen as a part of their videos. Unless you are already tapping that market.

Freelance to the freelancers, as well, if you are not. I don't know what your videos cost. But, were I you, I would try to market to folks who are putting together animated/motion graphic videos (marketing to the same customer base you are) and charging more than you.

Who are you marketing currently to? Website owners? Offline businesses? SEO consultants?

If you already have clients then why not use those clients as opportunities for bigger and better jobs? At least in this transitional period you could change your name to your domain, market your responses or previews with your link, and just all around make your customers realize that you don't just do $5 jobs but you are available to do a lot more.

The second point to that, however, is what exactly you plan on doing for these customers. Just because you have more quality does not necessarily mean that people will want to pay more than $5 for it...

Get your videos on YouTube...billions of users are always looking around Youtube, so you should get a lot of attention there. If you have a website, you can direct your viewers with a link to your website, which will surely boost your earnings and online visibility.

I want to follow up with a couple thoughts. There is the Video forum here that is subscription based. I haven't made the upgrade, so I do not know what info is in there, but maybe somebody else will chime in who has purchased it and can give you a basic 'yea or nea', concerning whether or not it was worth the money (somewhere around $20, I think).

I actually think that people like you are in a pretty good position, as I beleieve that quality video is underutilized by IMers, in general, and the fact that with mobile devices and tablets on the rise, video demand continues to increase.

There is also a race to the bottom with pricing with a lot of this stuff (content creation). Being a Fiverr folk, you have seen plenty of this, I am sure. 500 word articles for $1.00, Sparkol whiteboard animations for $10-$20, etc.

If you are not aware, there are some successful people here. The kind that will pay a copywriter $XX,XXX for a sales letter. Those are some folks I think you should try to identify and market your services to. That can be done by simply participating on this forum on a routine basis - consider this a networking hub for yourself and treat it as such.

Video discussions here on this forum, well, I find them to be a bit interesting, or uninteresting, as it were. And they don't seem to generate much conversation towards the direction you are asking (most seem to center around IMers asking how to create or use their own videos to market their product/brand, rather than how to market video creation services).

I don't get the feeling that everyone here understands where video is going and how important it will continue to be, so don't be completely dismayed by a lack of response to this thread - the internet Video Revolution is not yet in full swing, it is just starting to ramp up. I think the site owner understands this, subsequently creating a subscription forum based around the discussions.

Most people here offering video services are racing towards the bottom with pricing and using the same basic software (like Sparkol). Don't do what they do (at $100/100 words, you are not). As far as specific ideas, spend a couple hours reading this forum - there is a tremendous amount of knowledge buried here that you can apply to marketing any kind of service.

This forum itself is an awesome marketing/networking tool. So, for you, step one is complete, regarding your objectives. Namely, find a centralized location, other than Fiverr, of potential clients to market to. A lot of the rest is up to you, though, in a lot of ways. And that is simply because you are close to the crest of the video wave and there are not a lot of surfers in front of you to observe, study and copy effective methods from.

Look in the Warriors For Hire Forum and search for those offering spokesperson stuff (I can think of one). See what his sales page looks like, and see if there is anything you can glean from it for your own use. You can even throw and ad up there for a relatively minor fee.

Best of luck. Maybe some other folks will hop in this thread and give you additional advice. I was neither being overly critical of your videos, nor juvenile in commenting upon your looks, merely encouraging you to up the creative and technical level of your video so you can raise your price, and cement a nice paying, stable little niche for yourself ...

I would start by running ads - just to see if there's a demand for female video spokesperson. There may already be a demand, but paid advertising will let you know if it's a niche worth pursuing.

Build your own business. Build your own website promoting your services and add different videos and post different prices. Do your site but upload videos so people see your work. Also as people said above do your Facebook page and link it to your site.

    Good luck!!!

There is a Warrior called Todd Gross which recently launched a plugin with green screen videos for different Offline niches.

You could team up with him or do your own serious of green screen recordings with some generic text welcoming visitors to x website and sell those as a WSO in here and other Forums where Offline Marketers hang out.

You can then expand those customer leads to produce unique videos, higher price point.

Just from the top of my head but get creative, there is always a market for something like this.

        Hi Marty!

I found your advice incredibly enlightening. I have been a little worried about over-saturating the market, and while that's a ways off, the advice that you are offering makes complete sense in terms of the direction I should be heading.

        Thank you!

I do have to make sure I can pay my next months rent, so for now I'll have to sell myself (sounds dirty!!) as a spokesperson. Perhaps what I should be doing is raising my prices and focus more on exclusivity?

I've also been focusing on health and exercise lately - is there room left in that field?

Also, could tell me more about this PLR thing?

Originally Posted by Marty S View Post

I am going to go against the grain here and suggest that you do NOT sell yourself as a spokesperson. The main reason is that you are so identifiable and memorable, that if you do get a lot of work, eventually saturation will be a concern for the marketers that are actually strategic about their brand. And ironically, these are the also the types who will be willing to pay you what you are worth. Hence, I have 2 recommendations for you.

1- Create your own PLR video series using multiple subjects or software. As far as PLR goes, I could see you just killing it, as your work would be so much more entertaining and of higher quality. These videos would be a combination of you (the star) and on screen tutorials, such as the like I create with ScreenFlow.

2- Create your own brand, and do an affiliate marketing arrangement with a company that will pay you for each sale. You could easily OWN a niche market (email marketing training), or even a more competitive one (hosting) simply because you come across as honest, approachable and of course - easy on the eyes!

I think long term, these other options would serve you much better financially.

If you are genuinely good at what you do, post it up in the "Warriors For Hire" Section here.

People love good Video Spokespeople, especially if they are well priced and professional.

She's not selling videos for $5.00. There are a whole bunch 'o things on fiverr that cost way more than a fin.

You seem to have a lot of experience. Emmy's, college degrees, 20 years experinece, etc.

The lady is asking for suggestions on other marketing channels. I tried to be helpful and offer a vague one. You seem to have other motivations for being in this and other threads. You sure are tootin' yer own horn in every thread you are jumping into, as well as making sure to let everyone know you have some super fantastic system you have developed to rank vids on YouTube that they can buy from you, if they are lucky and selected by your awesomeness.

You got a whoppin' 7 posts and are using everyone else's thread to tell us how cool you are, how fantastic your system is, how selective you are with who your clientele is, etc. You are using everyone's threads to advertise and pimp your website, not contribute to a community and build relationships.

You are not answering questions, or trying to be helpful in the sharing, community, forum sorta way - you are just jumping in every thread, trying to push and advertise your 'system'

Certainly and emmy award video cat can afford an ad in the Warriors for Hire or to launch a WSO, right?

I gotta challenge for ya. How about you actually contribute something with your 8th post, instead of just repeating how awesome you are and what a badass system you have to sell. Offer a suggestion to the OP for another marketing channel she could explore, maybe a couple basic improvements to her current work, etc.

You are jumping in people's threads for the sole sake of branding yourself and advertising your super-fantastic system. 7 posts from you and I already grow tired of the blatant advertising you are forcing into everyone's thread.

Of course, my interpretations and assumptins to your motivations are my own opinion, but, I think it a very valid and accurate opinion here. Feel free to disagree with it and prove me wrong by offering some legitimate suggestions, versus blatantly advertising your own services as you are doing in every thread I have seen you in ...

One last thing about this and your system pimpin' you are doing in everyone's thread. You are flat out wrong, emmys, college degrees and 20 years experience included, and I gots me about 60,000,000 viral views and millions of dollars invested by VW to prove you wrong:

That there is nothing but creativity and entertainment. Only thing we know about that car is that it has a remote start. That's it. A $30,000 product (or whatever it costs), and the only thing they mentioned about that product is that it has remote start. There was zero hard selling, and very little branding. Hell, VW spent most of that commercial, that example of video marketing, branding and advertising somebody else's product and brand, Star Wars, instead of their own.

Let that one sink in for a minute. And they did through creativity and entertainment.

There are 60,000,000 views and millions of dollars, (not a paltry $350-$3500) invested by VW in that commercial that proves your claim wrong. In fact, VW has proven you can make pretty much your entire focus for a video to be of a creative and entertaining nature.

Don't argue with me about the importance of creativity, argue with the marketing whizzes that came up with this commercial and the 60,000,000 people that enjoyed the minute of their life it took them to watch it.

And then shared it and became little mini advertisers and billboards for VW.

I dunno Brandgineering. I am just a knucklehead who hasn't spent the last twenty years dealing exclusively with video, so what the hell do I know, eh?

I don't have set pricing as video projects are all unique, but at the moment I tend to charge around $1 per word for the raw footage, which works out to $125-$200 per minute BEFORE editing/post production.

I'd be curious to know what people think about having prices / rate-sheets listed vs not listed.

Well, either the OP got busy and hasn't come back to her own thread, or she just did the 'ol quick thread start/signature dump and split. But, the video topic is rolling around, so let me support my claim of the benefits of creativity/artistic qualities that a sefl-professed expert says creative content is proven not to sell. Exhibit B:

Creative content is proven not to sell, eh? Someone best let Apple's marketing department know this, eh? That commercial is pretty much exclusively creative content. It does not tell you jack about the product, its benefits, etc (granted most know about the iPhone, but still ...). You are hit from the git go with music. Not a jingle written for a commercial, but a real deal recording artist. Next comes the animated graphics. Is it art? I dunno, but it is certainly visually appealing and captivating and goes very well with the audio art presented.

No offense, buddy, but I m going to take Apple's marketing department's opinion on this one over yours ...

      Hi Christopher Fox!

I didn't disappear - I never got any notifications, so I thought that no one replied to my thread! Opps!

I wanted to thank you for your feedback - yes, I need to put up a facebook page (as well as a million other things), but that would be a good start.

I think I understand what you mean by the 'visual creativity and technicalities' that were absent. My personal experience is with acting, not film-making, which I understand is a whole different playing field.

The customer stream you mentioned - the higher-end video/creators and producers are actually the ones I want to target. Me and my team don't enjoy (or have any experience, as you can tell) editing videos, but we like shooting them, and the most cost-effective projects I have done were the ones where clients just wanted the raw footage, often on a green-screen, as they had their own post-production team.

The only 'marketing' I have done so far was Fiverr, and, a few days ago, putting up my site. So.. no marketing at all. I'm basically at square one.. maybe two at best.

If you are level 2 on fiverr, then you can charge $200 for one gig. That is a nice bit of money. Well, if you want more... develop a channel on you tube and become a partner, but I have never seen your movies. That would tell me what areas you might want to become a star in. All the best to you.

Get testimonials from those Fivver clients of yours.

Next throw a few ads out on Craigslist in the services section.

Next create business cards and hit the streets.

You can build a marketing team that will get you clients for you, or you can get your own clients.

You will need to hit the pavement, and that is a fact. You will never get clients just sitting behind your computer. Well you might get a few, but it will take longer to convert them.

Hey, you can start your own website and set plans and pricing for the service you offer. Since you offer service (not just content) you can easily market them online and build a perfect platform.

Don't worry, making a website is not that difficult, you can spend a few $$$ for a designer to make everything what you are not good at (design & programming).

It is easy to target your customers since you already know some of them (who can pay more than those $5) on fiverr. I'm sure that you can get into a success train since you're not starting from scratch.

Great talent! It looks easy to do as good a job as you until you try it yourself!! I was on a home shopping network for 3 hours and bombed, felt like 30 years, and I'm pretty good at basic presentation, but that is a whole 'nother world.

If you sell a product at a flea market vs. convenience store where ya gonna get more money? Fiverr is a flea market for cheap buyers. People willingly overpay for items at a convenience store. Make your services convenient.

How do most businesses procure similar services? Partner with those who have contact w/ your target businesses. Make it easy for them to do business with you. You could do generic videos for certain industry niches, then just plug in several business logos embedded or at beginning/end to send them a sample. I think you'd get a lot of interest.

edit: Realize most importantly, people do not buy videos for videos. They want RESULTS. Don't sell them a video. Sell them RESULTS, or what benefits the video will bring them.

Hey Suzi.. here's what I'd advise to you...

#1. you need to first figure out who your ideal prospect is.

What is the 'dream job' that you'd like to do? What are the best clients to work with? What kind of service are they looking for?

How old are they? Are they male/female? What do they do for fun? What market are they in?

This is step 1. before you even think about anything else you need to really nail down who your ideal prospect is...

Otherwise.. no matter what you end up doing you're going to end up getting stuck with a bunch of people that drive you crazy and doing work that you don't like lol.

    Create the avatar for them..
You need to do this first. Everything else is just semantics.

Once you figure out who you're market is and where they hang out.. the rest is easy..
Being as how you've done a ton of jobs on fiverr already.. that should've given you tons of insight..

Which jobs did you really like? which kind of customers did you like?

So for example.. let's say you figure out that you absolutely love doing sales videos for marketers... And that you would rather do 5 to 10 minute long sales videos instead of taking lots of smaller jobs..

Well.. where do marketers hang out?

    Here

So then you can create an Ad here in the Warrior For Hire section.. and you can offer 2 packages.. 1 package for a 5 minute long sales video, another for 10, and for additional length they can contact you

and now that you know your market.. you can run Facebook ads targeting them.

THEN since you've identified your market.. then you can find out who the top thought leaders in your area are.. there are marketers that sell video services to brick and mortar companies.. they get 1,000s of jobs each month.. connect with them

As BHW1 mentioned.. there are guys here that sell video creation / video ranking / courses on how to make money from youtube.. those are people you should connect + network with.. They can refer you tons of business

On the contrary.. if you find out that you absolutely love doing videos about parenting.. and those are the kind of videos you enjoy doing.. why not hit up all the top mommy blogs, get involved in the top mommy fb groups, go to mommy blogger conventions, etc.

      Hi Jarett!

Thanks for all your input. I'm not 100% sure who my prospect is. Someone who wants to pay me a lot and not stress me out, or waste my time.. but that's not really a 'prospect', is it?

In my experience so far, all the clients that fit that description were.. i don't know, at least 35 or 40, both male and female, but more often male, and were most focused on getting good quality results than saving money. Somehow those same people usually appreciated my work more than people who were out to get a 'deal'.

You asked what my Ideal Job is.. well, my ideal work is writing and singing songs, recording them, and performing them in front of people. And that's what I do.. but that doesn't exactly pay, at least not yet. I wrote jingles for people before, but it drained my creativity and didn't pay well either.

I do love acting, and have been in off-broadway shows, but that's not a good career. I really like being on camera, and don't really care much about what the topic is, as long as it's not offensive to me, not overly 'salesy', and my clients value me and treat me nice.

I've had a great time making a commercial for car parts company, an IT company, and even pretending to be a news anchor creating a fake news segment about some real estate investor.

The only commonality is that they were all easy to deal with. So maybe my 'ideal market' is not really a specific type of market.. but a specific type of customer?

How do I find and target those?

One basic thing lacking with your "How do I get people to find me?" is your website with nothing but a contact form on it.

People hate waiting and love to call a real person versus submitting forms.

If you want to get serious, you need to post a phone number or at least use a click to call system so people can have you call them (click to call works really well - amazing conversion rate).

And here's a specific example, I was going to send your phone number to one of our web sales guys because we're reworking the site right now but could not do it because you have no number listed. And I didn't feel like filling out the form since I'm not the right person to speak with anyhow.

If you choose, go to our website and look at the videos on our Pricing page. If you're interested in a longer term gig to be one of the people in these videos then please call our main sales line (888) 388-1815 and ask for either Toni or Gary J (not Gary W) and see if there's a match in what we need and what you're offering (I really think there is - you look great in your videos).

Yeah I agree with Tom over there!

If you are selling low price products a support number will be a nightmare.

If you are selling high ticket stuff people like to speak to someone first before they purchase!

      Hi Tom!

I've thought about having a number.. but the truth is that I'm kind of shy and don't really like having people call me unless I am ready for it, and have my partner around to deal with specific, technical questions. Does that 'leave your number and I'll call you back' thing work?

Oh, I got the message on Fiverr - I'll get back to your guy shortly, but in general I don't like using that system. You can't even use the word 'pay'!

If you don't want to waste your time so you can concentrate on the videos, the best option for you is to invest in PPC: Google Adwords or Bing Ads . I don't think Facebook ads suit your business.

      Are you kidding?

Facebook ads would be perfect for her business, as long as they were targeted properly she could do extremely well with them

True. Facebook is almost everything today. Just learning to use Facebook ads properly will help a lot.

I don't think anyone here has mentioned Linked in. Build your outreach there and connect with media people.. They are always looking for talent and used to paying for it.
