Maybe have a look at this free eBook: Get my book, eBooks The Smart Way, for Free!

(Not my book, not an affiliate link, no connection to author other than admiration, just a great guide - for free.)

This is a really great manual for putting together a classy and effective eBook and it was written by someone very unique (and very successful) in his field of online marketing. The guide is generally aimed at people who want to generate leads and passive online income, regardless of the field. eBooks are not exactly my thing (I prefer sales) but if you're interested in writing an effective eBook, this guide is pretty cool.

(DISCLAIMER: Well, crap, it's still free. But now it's got an email opt-in in order to access it. Guess he changed it when updated to the new site. I just tried it and it auto-responds a download link to your email address. Same great guide for free, just takes a few extra steps to get it now.)

If anyone goes to get this, PLEASE DON'T SHARE THE DOWNLOAD LINK. It's a great eBook that probably took some time to create and given away for free - At least give the man the respect of sending people to the link above instead of a direct download link.

Download Open Office to use as your editor (it's free)...

    https://www.openoffice.org

When you're done writing, editing and formatting your document...

Click "Menu" and select "Export as PDF".

Go to You Tube or Google and type in what you're looking for. You'll get more answers than you can shake a stick at. All the knowledge you need is there. Just hunt it down and learn it.

Word then "save as" PDF for normal eBooks and if you like to go a bit more into designing a great looking PDF, magazine style, then you can use Powerpoint, changing layout, and then same as with Word.

Free LibreOffice or similar can do fairly the same, I don't use them.

MS Word or Open Office, no more thought required! Start by creating an outline, keep it instructional and then fill in the additional content.

Even Google Docs will allow you to save as PDF. From there place it online in a Dropbox account, get a sales/squeeze page up with weebly, add PayPal buy now buttons, and start selling it!!

...Ahhh and the most time wrecking and easy to slack on part...you gotta write it! Took me 6 months to get a good 50+ pages. Now I sell a few a month at $97 a pop. I'm happy with that!

Got that right tntmarketing - the better you can get at outlining and getting your first ebook written, the sooner you can turn to making sales. There are ways to make the writing process faster - when we first started writing it took months to get our ebooks finished...these days we can get them done consistently in under 30-days. That has to do with efficient outlining, focus, filling in gaps in content with interviews or outsourcing (if we can't find the information ourselves) and even through collaborations.

Once you have it done, you get to enjoy the work once and sell over and over aspect of info products for sure.

Now is the time to put together a marketing plan.

You want to generally focus on a couple of areas - g

      1) Generating content, this can be a blog, videos, articles - this gives you a web of intriguing information through which to attract targeted traffic to your site

      2) Engagement - social networks such as Linked In, Twitter, Facebook - these are places that you can engage and get the attention of your market, often you send them back to your content in #1

      3) Partners - build a partner base that will share your ebook with their targeted eyeballs, this is the quickest way to quickly ramp up sharing your ebook offer

If I can, I'd like to offer two more suggestions:

        1. Pay for a good cover. People really do judge a book by its cover.

        2. Purchase a book design template. This is like a theme for a Wordpress site and will make your book look like a professionally published work.

These two things will help increase sales and decrease returns.

      Hi mate,

Let me just give you some tips that might be of help since it's your first ebook.

      1. Niche and market research.

Research the market to find out if your subject is wanted. Identify a profitable market first, then try to nail down into a submarket/niche. But you'll need to dig and dig deeper.

For istance, fitness/bodybuilding ---> workout for busy dads

Look for very difficult problems that have made life miserable then provide a simple solution to it.

      These sites will help you with your research(look at the trends);

TREND HUNTER - #1 in Trends, 2014 Trend Reports, Fashion Trends, Tech, Style, Design & Pop Culture
      Magazine Subscription Discounts & Deals | Magazines.com
      trendwatching.com: Previous free Trend Briefings
List your goals on 43 Things

      2. Spy your competition and study from them, look at their titles, hooks, what they are selling and REPLICATE offering different solutions.

      Sell what's already selling!

      3. Familiarize with the "Word Tracker" tool to find out how many times a month people search and look for such a product or information

      4. After you have made the research, start writing your ebook and use tools like Word or Open Office that it is free. After you wrote it convert in PDF. This is a feature you find in word and open office if i remeber well.

      5. Create an ebook ecover for it. Make your ebook stand out from the crowd with a good ecover. If you know photoshop you can create it by yourself or here theres a pretty cool tool you can use to create one(free):

ecover design - design it yourself online

      6. Then the marketing/traffic part which is ESSENTIAL. Creating the ebook is not enough, you'll need to master this aspect, study the "psychology of buying", persuasion techniques...what make people purchase and how to persuade people to buy from you. You'll need to master some aspects, copywriting is one of them.

      Good luck

Microsoft Word is definitely the easiest and best thing to use to create your book, especially if you ever plan on publishing on the Kindle.

I use iBooks author and then export to .pdf

There are many template companies for iBooks out there that can give it a real professional polish too.

Its so much easier this way. I used to do it in Adobe indesign

I agree that open office is the best for creating PDF. It is also easier to use them and make your links live in the PDF. This can be very frustrating for people using certain versions of word.

I use the free software Open Office. The best part about it is that once you have completed your ebook, there is a link in the software to create a PDF. It is newbie proof.

Write it up in Microsoft Word or the equivalent of Open Office... then go to "pdfonline .com" to have it turned into a PDF ebook for free.

For a general distributio ebook - do as above: Create in Microsoft Word or free OpenOffice and save as a PDF file.

Amazon Kindle requires a special format. I use an excellent program called "Jutoh" from Anthemion. You can convert a Word file in Jutoh, but it's easiest and best to just write your ebook in Jutoh from scratch.

I've tried so many different things to produce a quality ebook. Eventually I came right back to "PAGES" on my mac. Which is essentially just like Microsoft word. Try not to overthink it. Content will win over layout. Just make sure you have an absolutely amazing cover, title, and headline and you'll do fine.

I got started writing ebooks using the Ebook Pro compiler created by the late great Corey Rudhl. After his death, his company was sold and support for the product was discontinued. I was able to recompile my ebooks with Activ Ebook compiler which I found to be a superior alternative.

I read somewhere on the forum that OpenOffice is no longer being supported. With that in mind, I switched to LibreOffice LibreOffice 4.1 is here! (not an affiliate link). It's pretty much the same, but can open and save files in more formats.
