How to promote adult dating site?

I have an adult dating site. I mainly target low/medium competition keywords and use a good backlink service. I also add 10 relevant articles per month. It's a long term project of mine. Have a buddy making 2-3k/mo from 1 site and he has 4. SEO only and he's had the sites 2yrs now.

Otherwise, I'm in the Adult area successfully with social networks. But buy traffic in my opinion is the best choice.

The following is illegal and will get you into trouble so I am not advising that you try this. I am posting this as an example of what I feel the real secret is to internet marketing. And, of course, this little story is entirely fictional ....

Several years ago I attempted to make some money promoting a few of the adult dating sites. I created a site, wrote many articles on dating tips, etc and tried everything I could think of to add additional content and attract more traffic. I failed spectacularly.

Literally no one cared. All I was trying to do was to get people to visit the site and register for the free trial so I could be paid the $3 or $4 referral commission. But I made $0. Nobody was interested in even trying the site for free.

So I thought about it. I ventured outside the box. I applied my strategy over a 2 week period. And I began pulling in $600+ a day. Well, it was nice while it lasted. Here is what I did:

I asked myself the question: what do most people look for on the internet?

The answer I got was : porn. The frequently entered search term was: "free porn passwords" (also "free Brazzers password" and "free Bang Bros password").

I asked myself: how can I utilize these keywords to get people to register for a free trial at a dating site?

The answer was as follows:

Create a web page that spins a tale. A tale of a recently fired webmaster at the Brazzers pay site. A tale detailing how the web masters that work there have to constantly update the pages on the site and to test them use an in-house username and password that changes every month. How this disgruntled former employee still has access to these passwords and to get back at Brazzers posts them on the About Me page of his dating profile. The best part is, it's free to get access to his page. Just go there using this handy link and register for free and then go to his page and scroll down about half way. On the right side of the page is this month's username and password. Bookmark the page and get the new one each and every month.

I then posted about 20 teaser porn videos to YouTube using frequently searched for terms like "Lisa Ann", etc and included links to my main page. I also posted a Yahoo Answers question that banged the "free porn passwords" string several times in the question:

Hey, anybody know where I can get free porn passwords? I really want to find some free porn passwords. Because if I don't get some free porn passwords I think my pants might explode.

Then I came back under a different Yahoo ID and posted the reply which banged the keyword some more and offered a link to my main page.

Then I came back a few days later and selected my own answer as the best.

It ranked #1 on Google for the term "free porn passwords". OMG. Traffic explosion.

I washed, rinsed, repeated for "free Brazzers password" and "free Bang Bros password".

And made $600 a day until I got caught a month and a half later (oh yeah, I used the latest state-of-the-art link masking but somehow they tumbled me. They grew suspicious when none of the leads converted).

I promised never to do it again but I got to keep the money.

OK, so even though this isn't something you would want to try, effective though it may very well be, what does it teach us?

Traffic flows from strong motivation. No matter what product or service it is that you are promoting, discovering what the key motivator is for an eventual buyer of that product or service is the key to high traffic and high sales.

Finding that key motivator isn't necessarily easy to do. For example, to sell cars you don't sell the prospective customer on transportation. You sell him on fun, power, sexy, etc. You sell him on the feeling it will give him and how simply buying this product will transform him in the positive way that he desires. It will validate him to the world.

This is what separates marketing from sales. Marketing is the hard part. But that's where the treasure is buried.
