There is a free, open source software called Gimp that seems to do just about everything Photoshop can do.

I've been a heavy PS user for 13 years, wrote a short .pdf about how to make ecovers in PS and Gimp, so I installed Gimp a few days ago and it seems to have all the tools PS has.

Let me go dig out that ecover how-to .pdf, stick it up on a website and post a link here. I'll be back in a few minutes.

Look in the Warriors For Hire section of this forum. There are tons of great designers there. I've used Ebook Cover & Minisite Design Studio- Professional & Top Notched Web Graphic Design Service many times and always been 100% delighted. I think you'd be better off having a designer do it for you--it can be frustrating. You can get and ebook cover done for $50, maybe less. Good luck!

Here's the free ebook. Mods - there is nothing being sold at this site - I use the URL for testing.

It's here: http://www.ideapage.net/HowToMakeEcoversInPS.pdf

Of course, by the time you spend weeks learning Gimp it might be just as efficient to take Mike's advice..

Find a old copy of Photoshop... I am using Photoshop 6.0... it's waaay old... but all the new stuff is always backwards compatible... so I'm usually good!

I've got a cheap deal if you get frustrated, or check the WSO section, there may be someone cheaper still!

I think a great way to get a decent cover AND help out a fellow Warrior is to keep an eye out for emerging graphic designers.

Just because they are new to the forum, doesn't mean they aren't skilled designers.

I like to do covers myself but I've great ones done for free as part of artists porfolios or even for just a few bucks to help them get started.

I use photoshop to design ecovers. If you don't have the time to do it yourself I have a great WSO below.

Have a great weekend

I honestly think you would better hire someone to do one for you. It can be very frustrating trying to learn all those software stuff.

Note if you do not have the funds to pay for it to be done, you can always barter with someone here on the forum to work out a deal.

You can use a free actionscript from maxcovers.com, but it requires Photoshop CS 2 to run it. My favorite ebook cover creator is blackbeltcovers.com but it isn't free.
