how to promote your affiliate program?

I was wondering how you first promote your affiliate program after having started one? I have set this up for a small company now and have no clue how to spread the word as I am more a techie than a marketing expert.

any input is appreciated!

The best way (long term) is to build relationships with people who have lists. It's not something that you can implement right away, but get started ASAP. Just start contacting people and see if you have a fit.

You won't have much success spamming thousands of people with emails like "Hi, I just came across your site and think its great! I would like to offer you the opportunity of a lifetime..." I get these all the time and just click delete.

    Hope that helps,

      Hey Morry,

Thank you very much for your response! However, what exactly do you mean by 'people who have lists'. Who are those people and what kind of list are you talking about?

      much appreciated,

      Jerome

      • He means vendors of products within your niche (or blog owners, etc) that run an opt-in box on their index page. That way you can know for a fact that they can reach a bunch of people interested in that niche by blasting one single email.

I think the best place to start would be to do a search for "affiliate directories" and submit your program to them. Most will list it for nothing.

You first need to know what your numbers are. Conversion rates, and average visitor value are the top ones to know. Then, armed with that information, begin contacting other webmasters with sites that get a lot of traffic, and sell them on the idea of being your affiliate.

If your visitor value is high, it won't be too difficult. If your visitor value is not good, work on improving that first, and then work on recruiting affiliates. The better your visitor value, the better affiliates you'll be able to land.

Also, make it really easy for them to promote the site. If the sign up process is a pain, if creating links is a pain, if there isn't a lot of cut and paste promotional material for them to use, it will decrease the number of affiliates that sign up and take action.

If you can hand them a promotional email they can send to their list (with very little, if any effort required on their part), and you can provide them with some sort of idea as far as how much money they'll make from that mailing, it'll be pretty easy to get them to promote you.
