Alternative to FFA Paysmart in the USA?

Hi all,

There is an Australian payment processing company called FFA paysmart. They have some nice features if you are charging customers through some subscription service, such as lower fees and automatic followup of missed payments (i.e. they will handle it if a customer's credit card is declined, etc.)

Is there something similar in the US markets? That is, for a business based in the US, whose clients are primarily in the USA and billed periodically for a subscription.

If nothing else, Paypal subscription payments will work. But they are relatively expensive. (Correct me if that notion is mistaken.) What do you use?
