are there any reasons why i shouldn't use blogger instead of wordpress?

Blogger is an incredibly easy platform to use, you can edit templates with only JScript, html and css.

For what reasons do people not use blogger for when it comes to any of their projects? niche sites, authority sites, branding sites etc....

    Hi
blogger is much easier to use and it's for those people who do not have much knowledge about computer etc. It's for beginners but once you get use to it and want to start a project of your own on bigger scale then wordpress is the best. I myself started blogging a few years back via blogspot then after sometime I thought of starting a new project on large scale I switched to wordpress. So practically I have used both blogging platforms and now I say wordpress is best for sites, blogging etc once you get familiar with the concept wordpress is a great way to make your content visible in the right way.

One reason and one reason only that you need to rethink your position on using Blogger. You don't own it. All your work will be at their mercy. If they shut down....so do you.

Basically, this is why I have never used any platform like blogger or wordpress.com. Besides, getting a domain name and hosting is sooo cheap these days! It's a shame not to try to create your own "brand", so to say.

    Yes.

There are many, very compelling reasons.

The way to be sure that things like this don't happen to you is to stay well away from Blogger.

It doesn't even matter exactly what the rules say, there: they're so idiosyncratically and inconsistently applied and interpreted that there's no point in trying to decide these things "logically" or "reasonably". Even Blogger themselves openly admit that blogs are sometimes deleted as part of an automated process, without human intervention, when people (competitors?) "flag" blogs.

It makes no sense at all to let any part of your business, unnecessarily, be dependent on a site you don't yourself own and control.

The reality is that there are only really four (partly overlapping) groups of people (in "internet marketing") who use Blogger ...

    (i) People who are unaware of the unnecessary risks

(ii) People who imagine that those risks are all problems that happen "only to other people" and that they'll be ok "if they stick to the terms of service" (this is, of course, nonsense but a lot of people believe it )

(iii) People who don't know that you can have your own reliably self-hosted WordPress blogs without even paying anyone a penny for the blog, the theme or the hosting

(iv) Very few people who still imagine that "they must rank well because Google owns Blogger" (seriously, there are still a few people who believe that - it's also nonsense).

If you want to know even more reasons to avoid Blogger, some are listed in threads like these and a few hundred others in this forum ...

Google Suspended My Innocuous Blogger Blog
    Squidoo/Blogger as primary website
    Blogger and deleted blogs?

Could you give more details about that?

As far as I've seen, if you make a free blog on wordpress.com, they will place ads on your site. The No-Ads Upgrade costs $30.00 per blog, per year.

Or you can get the Wordpress.com Premium for $99 per year.

Or you can use Wordpress.org, but still have to pay for hosting (about 10$ per month, which also turns into $100 or more per year).

Are there any other solutions that I'm not aware of?

You're looking at wordpress.com. That's a free hosting site with a limited range of WordPress facilities and onerous, strictly-interpreted terms of service. They don't allow monetization or marketing, among other things.

When people in this forum talk about "WordPress blogs", they're talking about self-hosted blogs using open-source software originally from wordpress.org (which many hosting companies, these days, already have available inside their own hosting packages as a one-clink installation - though that isn't by any means the safest way to install it). If you host your own WordPress blog on your own hosting - even if it's free hosting from Freehostia.com, Byethost.com, 000WebHost.com or elsewhere - the terms of service of wordpress.com don't apply to you at all, and you can use your blog for marketing, monetization, etc. etc.

The reasons for not using Blogger are many. If you're building an authority site, the site ultimately belongs to Blogger ... not you. If you're building a commercial site to sell stuff, Blogger will likely eventually delete it. A couple of spam reports and poof, all your work is gone.

If you want to build a site that you control and that you can sell on without worrying about it disappearing, the only choice is a self hosted site with your own domain. I use Wordpress as my blogging platform.

If you plan to make small blogs that you just "set and forget", then you can use Blogger. The big advantage is that you won't pay for hosting. Your only cost will be the domain name, which is 10$ per year.

But if you plan to build a serious business that you want to own on the long term (and maybe sell one day), then you definitely need to use Wordpress or any similar platform where you own everything.

Why not both, I recently noticed someone that had backlinked from their blogger page to my wordpress website and the link juice was noticeable, but as many have also offered here depending on a third party instead of a more stable website, (wordpress is great, but so are other types of websites too)

So all in all, diversify, spread out, don't put all your eggs, in the same basket, eg.

Because Blogger isn't safe to use. And isn't necessary. And doesn't add anything that you can't more usefully and reliably get elsewhere (also without paying).

There's a tendency, particularly in internet marketing circles, to want to "exclude nothing", and to try to resolve either/or questions by saying "both", but the reality is that sometimes "judgement" does involves rejecting poor/bad things for which there are better alternatives.

Originally Posted by Humbee360 View Post

Absolutely. But, in this instance, diversify between two (or more) safe places, rather than one safe one and one unreliable one. Or between four safe places rather than between three safe ones and one unsafe one. There's always choice. Diversification is often a good principle, but it isn't, in itself, an answer: it still begs such questions as quality, reliability and selectivity. It isn't a justification for using something that isn't safe, when there are safer alternatives available for the same cost (in this case, free).

If you like Blogger, and you enjoy using it, then use it for those reasons, by all means - but don't try to convince yourself (or anyone else!) that your decision is justified just because of "diversification". That really isn't very "straight thinking".

Blogger much easier, but you're also limited by the insertion of the plug-in. Now blogger allows you to have the most professional graphic than a few years ago, however wordpressallows you to add plugins to your blog useful to your business, that can make you gain more return on investment. Try them both and see the difference.

This is a dreadful idea, for all the reasons explained in such detail above, Antonio. (Sometimes it really does help to read the thread, before adding your reply on the end ).

Not only that, but using a Blogger blog for the purpose of linking to, or generating traffic for, another site you own is expressly prohibited in their terms of service.

Originally Posted by Antonio De Santis View Post

A pure fiction. Sorry - this may have been true a decade ago (though I doubt even that), but it certainly isn't now. This is part of the Urban Myth School of Internet Marketing "theory" that "Google likes Blogger because they own it". It just isn't so, at all. Nor would it be very relevant anyway. Regularly updated sites are indexed very quickly indeed, by Google, without needing to be hosted at Blogger! I update all my self-hosted sites only 2-3 times per month, and they're always re-indexed within a few hours.

Respectfully, Antonio, reading post #6 above, and its links, would help you (and others) far more than repeating these myths and misunderstandings.

WP has many advantages over Blogger. It is fully in your control so you can use it as you wish you can
upload all kinds of files .you can have Plugins to simplfy your tasks, you can make simple blogs and also
custom made ecommerce sites. the only reason you use blogger is to save on hosting charges which i
think is already low enough if you need a cheaper hosting wait for patric day ,thanksgiving day,
independence day or some such event when almost all top hosting sites give huge discount in the range
of 66% so it should cost a meger $30 per year. If you are just starting become an affiliate
of clickbank and get one or two sales that should give you money for hosting.

A few years ago I built a stable of 11 Blogger blogs. They were full of content, were regularly updated and - as far as I could tell - they abided strictly with Blogger's TOS. I am a VERY white hat marketer and am careful about such things.

One day I had an email from Blogger telling me that my account and all 11 of my blogs had been terminated with immediate effect for 'gross infringement of the terms and conditions'. They didn't tell me what this alleged gross infringement entailed, and when I emailed support I was told that they were not prepared to enter into any discussion, their decision was final and as my sites had already been deleted, there was no chance of getting them back anyway.

To this day I have no idea what they thought I had done wrong, but I am certain that whatever it was had nothing to do with infringing any rules that I had ever read.

None of those 11 blogs were making much money - most were not even monetized anyway - so it was no big deal to me other than being very annoying that several months of work had evaporated, but it was an object lesson in why it is a very BAD idea to trust your work to third parties. Capricious interpretation of often badly-written rules, malicious complaints from competitors or suspicious corporate agendas can destroy your work in a heartbeat.

Building good things online is hard enough without having to worry about losing it all on a someone else's whim.

That's why, from that moment on, I decided to stick to self hosted Wordpress sites.

There are countless reasons why you should have your own wordpress blog on a domain you own.

One of the biggest benefits is that you are in 100% control of what goes on (except for the occasional breach in server security... it happens).

So content, plugins, media, it's all under your control. It can be overwhelming at first, but you should have the basics in no time.

Everything was going smoothly and they were gaining traffic and of course more profits.

So I updated them with more affiliate links for more products... And 1 day just poof.
1 email, and all is gone.

They told me, that I was creating a link spam website.
And that's it.. No chances of recovery.

Tried getting it back, but blah blah blah TOS blah blah blah... I just moved to self hosting Wordpress after a few months.

All the effort and time just ... Gone.

Well, WordPress is more flexible than Blogger. It comes with tens of thousands of themes, plugins, and widgets. Blogger lacks these features. Additionally, WordPress themes look better and offer increased functionality. There are plenty of reasons to choose WordPress over Bloggers, including the fact that you can set up a website or blog on WP using your own domain.

Wordpress is a lot easier to install on free or paid hosting than you give it credit. And, even if you just don't want to take the time to do that, you can go over to one of the gig sites and pay five dollars to have someone else install a Wordpress blog for you. The interface of Wordpress self hosted blog is so much easier to deal with than Blogger, more plug in options, especially for SEO. And, since you own the blog, there is no risk it will suddenly get deleted by anyone.

Not to mention how most hosting sites (where you pay monthly hosting) will have an auto script installer such as Softaculous that installs Wordpress for you. So with that option available, using Blogger is really no longer needed, even for the newcomer.

Perfectly true, of course ... but people should also bear in mind that that's typically far from the most secure way of installing self-hosted WordPress. Most people who ever get their self-hosted WordPress blogs randomly/maliciously hacked have installed them that way.

Wordpress is more flexible and independent, while Blogger is easier and a more direct way to get a blog up within minutes (and of course, it's free). If you are doing a controversial topic, stay away from Blogger, as it may get flagged.

Blogger is secondarily more flexible than WP in its other uses---it can be a quick testing platform to see what traffic you can generate trying out a certain method or niche topic, and can serve as a good Web 2.0 property to build rankings for your WP site. If you're testing your ability to throw a site together in turbo fashion based on noticing a hot topic on Google trends, Blogger is the way to go, without wasting money on extra domains and hosting. And so on...

Wordpress every time, as a lot of people have already said you have no control with Blogger, Wordpress is self hosting - if you are unsure about setting up your website try fiverr or elance and have somebody set it up for you - for just a few bucks, just read the testimonials carefully first and use someone who has a good reputation

I think the better question/answer might be, self hosted, or a free hosting site.

While wordpress is very popular, there is nothing wrong with using Drupal, Joomla or Concrete 5 as your self hosted site. Personally I am exploring Drupal more and more.

Besides Blogger there is also Tumblr which is a little more loose with their T&C's ( I run an adult site off of it and while not a lot, do make money). Ultimately, taking control of the site is key.

That being said, there are times I have had to put customers on Blogger, at least temporarily. Because:

Their IT/web guys don't like the security risk of wordpress (see above, drupal, joomla, concrete 5, etc)
Segregating their accounts becomes an issue
They are using a hosted e-commerce site and don't want to pay for additional hosting.

My main goal is to get them started doing something, anything and then I can move them over to their own self hosted blog (don't underestimate penny wise and pound foolish customers). The key thing is about every month (depending on how active) is to download your entire site in case it gets closed down. I do the same thing with Mailchimp with my restaurant clients in case Mailchimp ever get's it in their head to shut an account down, I have the list saved.

One thing for me is that if you intend to create sites purely for blogging purposes, go with wordpress. It's very user friendly. I liked its structure of how and where things are compared to blogger.

I wouldn't advocate using either blogger or wordpress.com since neither are properties that you would own (if they go down unexpectedly, so too does your content).

The same goes for tumblr, weebly and all the other free site creators out there in which you create on webpage on someone else's property.

Using the site script from wordpress.org, however, would be ideal. That can be installed on your own site that you actually own and you can customize it any way you wish.

Case in point: if you're going to be running a business don't cheap out on the most basic pieces of your foundation. Hosting and your domain are essential and should, ideally, be under your control.
