What Would Motivate You to be Productive?

I really hope to get some great answers from this because I feel the problem most people have is productivity.

Taking action is a difficult task for those that get easily distracted.

But.

Think of it like a video game.

If you play a video game, you receive XP and achievements for reaching certain goals, doing certain tasks.

So how can I make it possible for others to be more productive.

Throw me your ideas.

I have many of my own and want to implement them to help others, but I really don't know which route I should take and what is ultimately possible.

If you are an Employer, provide a conducive environment for your staff members and be an inspiration, in that way, they will be more productive in what they do.

Here is a quote from my friend, Ravi P:

Staying motivated to be productive is a matter of having CLARITY in your life.

    What is CLARITY?

Clarity is knowing EXACTLY what you want, why you want it and how you'll get it. In other words clarity is having a VISION, DESIRE and ORGANIZED PLANNING.

Motivation has a lot to do with your desire. How bad do you want to accomplish something? You must have heard this somewhere, "Obstacles are those things that appear when you take your eyes off your goal."

Start something with the end in mind and as soon as you see your motivation decreasing (i.e. obstacles appearing) visualize the end result again and think of the consequences if you didn't accomplish it. Humans do things either to get pleasure or to avoid pain. By visualizing the end result and thinking of the consequences you are reminding yourself of the pleasure you'll get if you do it or the pain you'll get if you don't do it.

This is what keeps me motivated. No matter how big the obstacle, my desire to win is so strong and the vision of the end result is so clear that giving up never becomes an option and persistence becomes a habit.

What motivates me? My kids and family.
I want to provide the best life for them that I can. Not necessarily money, because that comes and goes in life. What kids need is my time.

The successful online ventures that I take on must require very little of my time, or I won't do it.

Great answers and I appreciate everyones response

But let's say, you wanted to motivate others to work harder online.

Just like that of the Xbox 360, how you receive achievements for reaching certain goals. What would keep you motivated to actually do something.

Not anything physical. Maybe just the knowing that you are on the right path?

I can tell you of a recent experience. I was feeling like I'd lost whatever it was that motivated me to begin IM in the first place. Then one day one of my mentors made a challenge of doing some writing. It wasn't set at a certain amount each day but rather grouping together with others to move a website to the top of the search engines and in the process learn a critical step in SEO. That step was adding keyword specific and relevant content. There were several of us who accepted the challenge and within a few days our site was not only on page one but in the top of page one on Google.

So we all learned an important lesson and for me it got the juices started again and I have a renewed interest and desire to succeed. While this is just my experience I can see how the idea of a challenge with the potential for a worthwhile outcome motivated me to get going. The benefit to us individually was that our sig files linked back to our own sites so we got back links as well as more notoriety online.

I simply don't know what it will take to motivate people on an individual basis but a simple method is to create list.

I like to create a list of the things I have to do and It feels great when I can cross things off my list each day. I even look over my older list to see all that I've accomplished.

Meditation is probably the greatest motivator in my life. Taking time each day to meditiate on my plan gives me absolute focus.

Things aren't always perfect but if we can meet some of our goals each day its an added incentive to keep moving forward.

I also trust that when I'm moving in the right direction the right doors will open for me.

If you're trying to motivate other people, you could be creative and come up with some challenges that they can compete for - something you can quantify or a problem they can solve. Reward and recognition can go a long way, and I think we all love a little competition once in a while.

For myself I kind of use my imagination. I need the goal, and than I imagine that I'm up against someone else you thinks they can do a better job than me. I make the stakes what ever I want, and give it all I can - once I have achieved my goal, I reward myself very well. It's sounds a little strange but it works for me.

Like what you have said, you can receive XP and achievements for reaching goals and doing some task. In short, you have a goal to accomplish and the very basic reason why you need those XP's and tasks to finish.

Now, if you are into the idea of productivity, it's a matter of setting your own goal and the desire to achieve it. Taking action is easy, since you can just start from the first step to attain it. But the hardest part is the consistency and the focus. Sure you can accomplish some tasks, but will it be the same desire for the next? Or will challenges overcome you and that you will have to give up?
Being productive, in my point of view has something to do with what motivates or drives you to really pursue these things that you want to do. I mean, people work for an object, and if you take away that object, you will surely make that person inactive. Example to what I was saying, if a person is motivated to work because he wants to provide his "future-wife to be" the needs for their future, he will surely be inspired and determined to really deliver and perform the task that would be given to him. If then his "future-wife to be" decides to go with another man, would you think he will still be the same in his drive to pursue the task at hand? This means, you have to have something that drives you to be productive.

Personally, my family is what drives me to pursue the tasks and the "XP's" that I needed in order to reach my goal, which is to provide them the best that I could give (I am not referring only to material possessions). The basic health benefits, education, meals on the table and shelter. And always think that what you do is simply NOT only for yourself; remember that there are also other people that are relying on you.

Motivating others is an excellent skill to have, in any industry or situation. Not everyone has it though.

There are many things that can motivate others, and here are a few that I know of.

      - the first and most obviously way is to actually ask them. You'd be surprised how many people change when they know someone cares. Just spending a little time talking to them and finding out what they're passionate about and what their needs are will end up building their self esteem, and they will end up wanting to help/please you automatically.

Here's a quote for you: “If people know we expect good things from them, they will in most cases go to great lengths to live up to our expectations.” ~ Alan Loy McGinnis

When you show genuine interest people will respond.

      - We all have long term goals however it is crucial to set short term goals too. This would end up accomplishing more in the long run.

      - Once they've accomplished these short term goals, they should be appreciated..maybe dinner or "Thank you Tom!" email card

      - Another thing that makes people feel good about themselves, is offering help or advice.. so ask them for their opinion on something.

      - And finally, be kind to others. Treat them with kindness and respect.

Note : There are people who are motivated by fear too.. whether fear of loss or fear of failure, etc. but we don't want to use that method, it will only end up ruining us later

Hope this helps. All the best!

Me, i just think of my family, they keep me strong and motivated. Also, i used to say to my self "be positive, you can do it..God is with you" then in a few minutes i'm ready do move forward. It's a matter of psychology what you think will be happen.

It seems to me like different people are motivated by different things. Some people are motivated by money, some by recognition, some by the prospect of something beneficial in their lives. The company that I retired from had a belief that people were motivated by the status that was placed on them. So, when it came time for a monetary raise they would reward them with a title that made them think they were very important to the company. So, I think it's where you are in your life that determines what motivates you as a person.

Some people are motivated by badges -- as they seem to be all the range on sites like Foursquare, GetGlue, etc. Maybe modeling those sites?

Encouragement from other people is actually quite motivating. Whether it's just a "good job" from other forum members or people answering questions I've asked. Time based challenges and contests are also helpful. As they say, goals must be time-bound so anything that has a deadline can help productivity.
