Money is only a tool.

"Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver."

A favorite quote from Ayn Rand reflecting something we often overlook in online marketing.

Just as you won't make money if don't have a clear vision, you'll have no way to draw happiness from the money you make, if it's the main reason for your actions.

Don't make money the driver of your decisions whether you have it or not. Be clear about what you desire from life and create the path, including work & leisure to get there.

Follow your passions and provide product & information around the areas you want to change or share with the world, and happiness, money, and the path will all become clear together.

Very true. I've learned this lesson as well.

Do not decide "I want to make a lot of money" or even, "I want to make my living with IM".

Instead, first, make a list of goals, things you want, make specific how you want life to be, then add up what's that's going to take and say "I want to make that money to support that life".

The person who makes $100,000 is not even half as satisfied as the person who makes $10,000 and can take his dream vacation and buy a grand piano or whatever he/she has always wanted.

Absolutely. Without a specific driving purpose, there's very little chance of ever seeing the first dollar toward that $100,000!

For me, getting my time back was just as important (or more) than the money I was making. You could be making a million a year, but if you have to work 100 hours a week to get it, what's it really worth?

    Very true Braden,

I left a job making more than $150k but working 80+ hours 3 years ago. It took me around a year to find the right path for myself, but since I have, the balance of money and time are on my hands.

There are still weeks where I work 80+ hours. But they are on my terms, for projects I'm passionate about, and often followed by a few weeks where I can put things in passive mode with only a few hours.

Money is only a tool means being in control of our money and our finances, rather than the money being in control of your life.

  • A lot of people get the misconception that we who make money are a bunch of shallow, materialistic dogs who care nothing more than the satisfy our own greed. That's because people like to just think of us as just money. The truth is it's not the money we want. It's what we do with the money is what we really want. Not many others really go deeper into this than you may think.

A lot of people fail because they just 'want money' or 'want to be rich'. I don't think that's good enough. I think what really keeps you going is the dream that you hold on to. What you do once you get that paper. The things that you can make happen as a result. That is beyond 'just the money'. It's all about the kind of life you really want to live. And money is just one means to an end.

Money is indeed just a tool to getting what we really want out of life. If we make money our lord and master, then it is just as Nickbrander said, we will then lose our free-will which is but priceless. Money after all, does not make one happy nor it will buy us more friends or more time in this world. If used wisely, money can serve us well, but never the other way around.

I'm sure I've shared my thoughts about money before, but I think it worth repeating.

I have nothing against money at all. Everyone needs to earn money to live, plain and simple. Some strive to better themselves and/or make life better for their children, to help others less fortunate them themselves, etc. That's very commendable!

Money within itself is a neutral tool neither representing good or evil. But the motivating factor behind what we do to accumulate it and what we wish to accomplish with it does come from good or evil.

When one decides to value money more than anything else, giving it more worth than human life, and begins to covet it doing anything to get more with total disregard to right or wrong, turning their backs on their conscience because they are blinded by greed, then the evil they create abounds and spreads. It eats away at everything good just as leprosy eats away flesh.

In the real world, people have enough sense to avoid coming in contact with fellow human beings infested with flesh eating diseases, but not those diseased with soul destroying greed which quickly spreads as fast as a plague. We have the intelligence to put those infested with such diseases of the body in quarantine, to help protect the public, and impede its spreading and causing a killer epidemic. But do nothing of the kind to stop the silent spread and infestation of the very root of all things evil; the love of money.

Yes, money is merely a tool, but we must be wise in what exactly we use that tool for.

That is a powerful quote dude!

Wealth isn't money, money is only a symbol of wealth. Wealth is what you did to get where you are. All the blood, sweat and tears you put in to get from where you began to where you are now.

People who are in solely to make money are unlikely to succeed. There is more to it than just the dollar sign.

I agree with that quote and I teach my students to think like this. Money is just an instrument. People that make a psychological connection with money are not keen to invest and progress in business.

  • Yes money is only a tool that helps us to be alive and no one can replace you as a driver because you're the one who is helping yourself to live unless you pay other people to become your auto pilot to replace yourself.

I always thought that money is just the means. Means to pay off the bills, means to chill off an evening a week, to dine, to go on vacation. Unfortunately a lot of people see money as the end by itself.

Also remember that if you want to run a successful business you should stop thinking about how to make money and start thinking about how to provide more value to your customers.

Great points I enjoyed this post!
