Question about dns/nameserver for domains

Sorry if this is in the wrong category. I'm assuming this question fits under "Self Improvement"

Quick question: If I point a domain hosted by smartdots.com (e.g whatever.net.tc) to my hosting's nameserver, would my smartdots domain (whatever.net.tc) still be available even if smartsdot is undergoing "scheduled" maintenance?

Like right now the only .net.tc domain I use (my first and only) is down because smartdots is doing maintenance. So I was wondering if I was to point my .net.tc domain to my web hosting's nameserver instead of using smartdots's nameserver if that would prevent my .net.tc domain from going offline in the future when smartdots decides to do 1+ week of maintenance.

I guess I could ask this question on a tech support forum, but thought I would give this forum a try first
#dns or nameserver #domains #question

It really depends on if smartdots.com is working on the nameserver.. or something else. The nameserver is just the relay to the right IP Address. But maintenance could be on many things, some of which will make your site unavailable anyway, regardless of DNS.

Yes, this is in the wrong section. It probably belongs in the Website Design section.

To answer your question...this is totally unacceptable! There is absolutely no excuse for a name register to pull all their services offline because they are undergoing ""scheduled" maintenance. I would be horrified. Any respectable name register should have redundancy servers they would "switch" to to continue serving (or directing) your name to. Even if the entire state went down in a massive blackout they should have redundant servers in other parts of the country if not the world.

This is clearly a backyard operation, perhaps one person working out if their parents basement. If it's not they would have a LOT of explaining to do.

Move to a real domain register immediately.

@LisaAllen - cheers, thanks for the help, much appreciated.

@Mr Bill - Ah, thanks for the info about my question and what category this belonged in. much appreciated. Ya, I didn't think about it being some dude running the entire operation out of his parents basement. I figured they got raided for doing something illegal, only contact method is e-mail, and they don't response..

but ya, already bought a real domain the other day.. so glad I didn't use smartdots for more than 1 free domain

thanks again to you both for the help though, sorry again for placing this in the wrong category, take it ez

For the record, I've been using Namecheap and Total Choice Hosting for (over) 10 years without an issue. I've hosted over 300 domains and ran a dedicated server (had it all to myself) at TCH for 4 years.
