Moderators for a forum, any ideas on compensation?

If we were to take on moderators at our forum, what would entice you to become one?

We are thinking of offering exclusive ads for the moderator displayed in their subforum, or a banner on main forum,

Say we opened up a SEO forum, and wanted expert mods, would a banner or free ads be enough? Would an affiliate offer?

Many of you were volunteer mods here, what would you look for in a new sub forum?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

The biggest attraction would be that a moderator has an opportunity to become an authority figure to that pool of people. If they have any marketing sense at all, and that forum is very big at all, then that should be more attractive than a wage. You might offer them some extra privileges like a monthly solo ad to the group or something. Maybe a banner ad for their product. It will motivate them to help you build the forum. If its a marketing forum and they cant see that as opportunity, then they don't have what it takes to be a good moderator for you. That's my two cents. Hope it helps.

Just a thought to, you could give them more signature privallages to, maybe a picture sig if you have restricted it. As you say, email blast once a month etc... You could also run moderator of the month and they get x reward to ensure all mods are doing their best. Just a few thoughts!

As others said, it's not really about the wage, it's about incentives so they can make more money..

On other general forums, I know some mods are doing it for free! Just voluntouring

Some times the baby gets thrown out with the bath water. I think an appeal process would work, to keep the forums from spam and trolls, but a poster (especially a good one) could at least ask for a review and we could either restore it or delete with explanation. How's that sound?

Good point. I'm in one forum where the moderator asks people that are obviously spamming to remove the post. I said just delete that crap. He said he has to give them a chance to respond first. Uh, no.

It all depends upon your forum size, giving signature space is also a way to make money for those moderators if the forum is too big.
If your forum is new or having less people, then pay for their valuable time.

Well, we're an established (15 years) boutique business forum, and have a current membership of around 2500 (high near 7500) although traffic shows about a 6 to 1 ratio of members to visitors.

We're adding several new subforums, each with a need for a moderator and an EXPERT, and will continue to have paid subforums too, as we have had several over the last 15 years.

We're seeking a controlled growth, don't want to explode but keep it intimate, and high quality. Maybe 25k members, tops.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, we will be incorporating several of your ideas.
