Any Traveling Warriors Here?

Hey guys,

I don't know about you, but one of the big reasons I decided to work for myself online is the freedom involved. So I'm taking advantage.

I'm going somewhere abroad for a couple of months, probably in mid January. I'm single at the moment, young enough to still do this, and it's something I've always wanted to do. I'm also making enough money to do it comfortably.

I'm thinking Asia. More specifically, after some deep thinking, I'm thinking I'll set up home base in the Philippines and take short trips out of there to other countries in the region.

I'm planning on working during this time as well, but not as hard as I am now.

So, the plan is a short term rental in a house/apartment in Manila. And I'll take some time to explore the country and the other parts of Asia while I'm there.

Has anyone ever done something like this? Any experiences? Anyone have any tips for the Philippines specifically?

Anyone want to join me? My local friends all have day jobs and no time to trek around the world.

If you're about to recommend "visiting before I move" I'm just taking off. I've traveled abroad plenty, and if I don't like it somewhere I'll explore somewhere else.

Thoughts? Opinions? Advice?

I'd love to hear some feedback.

Thanks,

-Scott

Scott - when I got out of high school I married my high school sweetheart and went to Germany for a year. His proposal came at the airport..and he said he could call and get a 4 day leave and then I'd be able to come over there with him. I was stunned and then he said "hey, if it doesn't work out, at least you get to see Europe.

The marriage didn't last after we got home, but it was the most memorable year and a half of my life. I went everywhere and saw everything I could. When the guys were gone on field maneuvers the wives would load up and just go on our own.

Every week there was something new to see or do - new foods to try, new communications to learn, castles to tour, museums, mountains, history of a thousand years instead of just our two or three hundred.

Everyone else was astounded that I would just pack up and leave with no real notice...without spending a long time thinking about it, planning for it.

It changed my world forever and I have never once regretted jumping ship and just running off without a second thought. I still do it today, but the trips are within the States.

If there is somewhere you want to go....something you long to see and you have the means to go there and see it - especially if you can wander on if you don't like it or get the urge to go further and elsewhere....DO IT.

The only real tragedy on this planet is being on your death bed thinking of all the things you could have, should have done but didn't.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I'm actually an Air Force vet, I've seen quite a bit of the world, some nice countries and some not so nice countries.

That's the thing I really miss about it, the travel.

Besides the occasional trip to Vegas or a road trip, I haven't done any serious traveling for a good 4 years.

I remember when I found out I was going to be stationed in Anchorage, Ak.

I was livid. I was thinking "Great, I join the military and they're going to send me to freeze for the next 3 years"...

Anchorage was like a whole different world. I ended up loving it (And I got to "visit" plenty of warm places during my stay too)...

I miss that feeling. I'm in my hometown, born and raised here. I need to spend a few months in a different world again, it's a pretty incredible feeling.

I agree with everything you said, thanks for taking the time to say it! I'm pretty sure I'm actually doing this. I need to start planning now though.

Well, I am sure you are aware that a certain Warrior here will speak up very soon with some great advice.

I am actually quite jealous, I have traveled quite a bit in Central and South America and had a visa in Belize for an extended trip to help with the hurricane clean up, but those trips were with my ex and over the past couple of years now I have not had any one to travel with, but dang I really, really would love to see Philippines, too.

Hope you work it out and keep us posted on the details!

Sounds amazing. I'm about to do the exact same thing... pack up and move... except my plan involves Paris and then Colorado.

I've been to Manila and Puerto Galera - beautiful countryside and incredible sweetcorn sold from roadside barrels

But like you say - if you don't like it you're not committed to anything. Ahh the sweet feeling of "just taking off" freedom...
