This is driving me crazy. I keep seeing "your" being used when you mean "you're".

Get it right. "Your" denotes possession. As in "Your crap salespage". "You're" is short for "you are". As in "You're driving me crazy".

Every day I see this. In salespages, in emails, in forum posts. Is this not taught in school anymore or doesn't anybody give a damn about correct grammar and spelling?

YOU'RE DRIVING ME CRAZY.

In forum posts I don't give a crap if someone uses an improper form of that word.

However if I was reading a sales page or a professional email then I would be turned off. I wouldn't buy something from someone who didn't at least do ONE proof read of their product. Tells me that they were more interested in $$$ than quality.

Before you go about cursing out and blaming our school and education system.....

You may all want to consider the fact that a MASSIVE percentage of the stuff you are reading online is written by someone that speaks English as a second language.

Seriously, how many times can the word "avail" be fit into 1 article.......

Oh well that's all right then. If English is their second language it's perfectly OK to mangle it.

But seriously...I'm not talking about people with English as a second language. I'm talking about so-called educated Americans/English/Australians et al, not having a bloody clue how to use "your" and "you're".

              I guess you're a fan of Engrish.com. I know I am.

                I guess you're a fan of Engrish.com. I know I am.

I was in no way condoning the fact, but was more commenting on the previous statements that the school system was to blame.

The problem here, even as you stated, is the "so-called" Americans, English, Australians et al. Are they really native English speakers, or is it all just another game of online "make-believe".

Seriously though, if people are tired of reading poor English content, and having the net filled with grammatical mistakes and spelling errors.......

Then maybe it is time to look within ourselves, and have webmasters and online marketers all over the world stop paying $1-$2 for a 500 word article for their flog, blog, farticle, "optimized" content. Even if an American, Australian or Canadian is willing to do work at that price....you might want to verify whether or not they have their middle school diploma in hand...

Metrocity, I know that you are a writer yourself (and a well known and experienced one for that matter) but you have to admit that a large percentage of the time it is the same people COMPLAINING about the internet being stuffed with poor quality content that are MORE than willing to hire the cheapest writer they can find within a moment's notice.
Hmm...Fill the world wide web with useful and legible content that can benefit users....or save a buck or two whenever it may be possible to do so.
Unfortunately, that is an easy decision for far too many, don't you think?

Anyway. I blame the school systems. I was playing a game with one of my younger cousins several months ago and I absolutely couldn't believe the difficulty she was having doing simple math and reading the game cards. Honestly, we should have stopped playing the game and pulled out the flash cards.

This has been getting on my nerves lately too. I admit that I sometimes slip up, but I see a whole lot of posts that aren't even near grammatically correct. Not a huge deal to me, but it's just one of those annoying little things.

Sure, it's no sales letter, but forum posts are still a reflection of the author.

In a forum post, not so much. But I see spelling and grammatical errors on websites and in sales letters all the time, and it's a real turn-off.

Recently I visited a really nice looking sales site, but there were so many errors I just couldn't take the site seriously, so I left. My loss? Perhaps. But if someone can't take the expense (small) of having someone edit the material, then how can I have faith in what they have to offer?

Misplaced apostrophes are something I see everywhere. It's instead of its, they're instead of their, you're instead of your, and so on. Aaaaaargh!

      But that's just me.

Mel, it's time for a chill pill.

Spelling is one of my pet peeves also, but even so I've caught myself making the same mistakes when I'm in a hurry - my fingers have minds of their own, it seems.

That said, I agree that sometimes there is no excuse. A couple of years ago, on the readerboard of a major Chevrolet dealership in a major city, I read this:

    2008 Camero's Now In Stock!
    30 to choose from!

For crying out loud - all the guy had to do was look at the base of the sign at the Camaro. Not to mention the apostrophe. <sigh> I ran out of chill pills that day and called the General Manager

This kind of stuff is one of my pet peeves, but I've kind of forced myself to ignore it as much as I can. In the grand scheme of things, it's not that big of a deal, really.

I remind myself that the internet is a worldwide medium, with a lot of people for whom English is a second (or further down the line) language. And considering that most of the "kids" working at my local McDonalds, Starbucks, etc. can't figure out change if the power's out or they shut the till before giving me my change, I don't have the highest opinion of the state of the education system

If I notice this kind of stuff on a sales letter, it doesn't make me click away necessarily, but it will add to my "doubt level" sometimes, creating one more obstacle for the seller to overcome to convince me.

Funny enough, if it's on a sign or something in the "real world" it bugs me a whole lot more though...

As someone that makes my living putting words on paper (or at least on a computer screen), I feel your pain. Not only is there the your vs, you're issue, but many, many other common errors.

    effect vs. affect
    its vs. it's
    can vs. could
    their vs. there vs. they're

But without a doubt, the most infuriating thing I've seen lately is the use of the word "prolly" as a substitute for "probably."

    I can't get much worse than that . . . I hope.

I don't know why anyone would get their knickers in a twist over such things. I'm still undecided if people are actually becoming more illiterate or if technology is just causing a shift in what literacy entails. It doesn't look professional, granted, so I would understand if such grammatical errors were included in something you paid for. That said, I've read original manuscripts written by highly paid professional writers before they were fixed up by editors, and they were full of grammatical errors enough to cause old school grammarian to have a breakdown [screenplays are especially full of such mistakes -- the more professional, the worse (higher-ups don't have to obey as many rules and probably aren't even aware of them) -- since they're blueprints, not actually intended for the general public to read].

Mal's a drama queen. He wouldn't actually chew off his arm; maybe slice off
a finger to soothe the savage beast, though.

Here are a few I don't think have been mentioned, yet.

    Loose vs. lose

    Wary vs. weary

I haven't seen the confusion with the latter as much as others. It
seems the confusion is using "weary" to express feeling cautious.

"I'm weary of offending Mal with my poor grammar and spelling."

On the other hand, I'm sure Mal's pretty tired of being offended with
    poor grammar and spelling.

The grammatical errors quite honestly don't bother me at all. I realize that the internet is not completely inhabited by English only speaking people. I think it actually depends on who you are marketing to.

Kids/teens will accept typos, shortcuts, misspellings and slang.

If you're trying to the attention of anyone with a college degree you'll lose them at the first typo.

Which brings me to my pet peeve - "loose" instead of "lose", as in "You might loose your keys". I see that everywhere and it pi**es me off to no end.

Blame it on the schools, and the spell checkers, people are too focused on proper spelling they forget the grammar is equally important

Something I wrote a while back. I was going to put it on the web but never got around to it

Attention Bloggers - You need to learn this stuff. Really, you NEED to learn this stuff.

I read lots of blogs and forum posts every day, and I see these mistakes made again and again.

I'm talking about three little words -

    THEY'RE, THEIR, and THERE

Learn to use these words correctly and your credibility and respect goes up dramatically.
Don't be an internet dummy. LEARN to use these words correctly!
They are three very different words, and they have very different meanings, as you'll see.

THEY'RE is a combination of the words THEY and ARE. It's also called a contraction, but that's not really important here.

Here are some examples of the correct usage of THEY'RE

THEY'RE going to the beach. (Same as THEY ARE going to the beach).

THEY'RE outside. (Same as THEY ARE outside).

THEY'RE on their way home. (THEY ARE on their way home).

Now you think of some more. Remember, anytime the word you're using means THEY ARE then THEY'RE is the right word to use.

    ..............................

    Now let's talk about THEIR.

THEIR is possesive. It's used when you're talking about stuff that belongs to THEM.

    THEIR stuff.
    THEIR car.
    THEIR apartment.
    THEIR website.
    THEIR opinion.

    Got it?

    THEY'RE on THEIR way home.

    .................................

    Last one: THERE

    THERE refers to a place.

    Over THERE.
    Up THERE.
    Down THERE.

We're going over THERE where the light's better.
I live up THERE in Oregon.
The car's over THERE in the garage.

    ......................

    OK, now all three:

THEY'RE out THERE in THEIR new boat.

THEY'RE (they are) out THERE (a place) in THEIR (it belongs to them) new boat.
