Own up: what records bring a tear to your eye every time, without fail?
Okay, so I was just thinking earlier that we've probably all been through extremely bad patches in our lives. Times of distress, heart-ache, mourning and what not. We've probably listened or at least heard some records during this time which we felt resonated with us and our situation, to some degree. Records that we probably now associate with that period in our lives, whenever we hear them.
If you're willing to share, I'd like to know what they are for you, and (again, if you're willing), where each records takes you back to.
I'll go first (and maybe last, if everyone else is too shy / private for this sort of thing)
I went through a pretty bad patch last year, from around this time up until a few months ago, when my girlfriend suddenly broke up with me. I know, it's hardly an original story... it's probably happened to most people at some point. But I don't get involved with other people easily, and I don't deal with things like that the wy a lot of people do (such as trying to blame or hate the other person, etc) ... so it was hard for me to get over it.
Mark Knopfler is one of my favourite artists. I find his guitar in his solo works to be irresistably pleasing. Unfortunately, my circumstances last year have ruined my ability to listen to a few of his songs now without cracking up, lol.
#1: Mark Knopfler - Golden Heart (usually the studio version, but I prefer the guitar in this live one):
#2: Mark Knopfler (again) - Are We In Trouble Now? (mostly the slow ending guitar solo):
#3: Counting Crows - Anna Begins:
#4: Del Amitri - Always The Last To Know (doesn't get the tear ducts going like the others', but still makes me feel weird):
That should do it.
So go on ... let's have it
EDIT: Almost forgot another one I listened to a lot when I was mourning my lost love, haha "True Companion", by Marc Cohn:
G'ah, though.. gotta admit it, movies and music make me crack up easily, and yet in person I come across to others as being as cold as a concrete floor. What's up with that
EDIT 2: Okay, last one -- promise. Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold. Prefer it to the Sting version, has far more emotion in it, and her voice is perfect for it. This was played at my grandad's funeral in 2005, and brings that all flooding back. It's just sad in general, though:
