Own up: what records bring a tear to your eye every time, without fail?

Okay, so I was just thinking earlier that we've probably all been through extremely bad patches in our lives. Times of distress, heart-ache, mourning and what not. We've probably listened or at least heard some records during this time which we felt resonated with us and our situation, to some degree. Records that we probably now associate with that period in our lives, whenever we hear them.

If you're willing to share, I'd like to know what they are for you, and (again, if you're willing), where each records takes you back to.

I'll go first (and maybe last, if everyone else is too shy / private for this sort of thing)

I went through a pretty bad patch last year, from around this time up until a few months ago, when my girlfriend suddenly broke up with me. I know, it's hardly an original story... it's probably happened to most people at some point. But I don't get involved with other people easily, and I don't deal with things like that the wy a lot of people do (such as trying to blame or hate the other person, etc) ... so it was hard for me to get over it.

Mark Knopfler is one of my favourite artists. I find his guitar in his solo works to be irresistably pleasing. Unfortunately, my circumstances last year have ruined my ability to listen to a few of his songs now without cracking up, lol.

#1: Mark Knopfler - Golden Heart (usually the studio version, but I prefer the guitar in this live one):

#2: Mark Knopfler (again) - Are We In Trouble Now? (mostly the slow ending guitar solo):

#3: Counting Crows - Anna Begins:

#4: Del Amitri - Always The Last To Know (doesn't get the tear ducts going like the others', but still makes me feel weird):

That should do it.

So go on ... let's have it

EDIT: Almost forgot another one I listened to a lot when I was mourning my lost love, haha "True Companion", by Marc Cohn:

G'ah, though.. gotta admit it, movies and music make me crack up easily, and yet in person I come across to others as being as cold as a concrete floor. What's up with that

EDIT 2: Okay, last one -- promise. Eva Cassidy - Fields of Gold. Prefer it to the Sting version, has far more emotion in it, and her voice is perfect for it. This was played at my grandad's funeral in 2005, and brings that all flooding back. It's just sad in general, though:

Hi Mark - I know exactly where you are coming from and of late when I am upset I won't listen to music - there is something about it that just gets you right in the heart - and if your heart is sick - well I don't go there.

Conversely when I am ready to get over myself I will listen to some nice angry, empowering PUNK Rock - No heart there - just the anger - and it is perfectly ok to be angry and to express it - as long as you don't hurt anybody in the process.

First this is from my - pre-teen age - where I learned to cry - and about absolutely nothing. This song will make me cry to this day.

#2 Same period same reason - beautiful

#3 Enigma - I don't know why - well yes i do - it's about a huge crush i had on the guy who turned me on to Enigma via web conference. We are best of friends but that is all he wrote.

#4 - A classic - so many memories "He has touched her perfect body with his MIND"

I will try to think of more but I have a huge library to go through to find the tear jerkers.

    Rock on

Thanks for the input so far, everyone. It's nice to know what stuff resonates with people on an emotional level.

I added another one to my list.

Ok - although I just joined and don't have the much info yet, I wanted to post the songs that tear at me.
    1. Blue Moon with a Heartache - by Rosanne Cash (the words, "what would I give to be a diamond in your eyes again", I relate to my feelings toward my ex-husband. Although we have been divorced for about 6 years now, I still don't know exactly why his heart turned cold and wanted a divorce. I love the song, but almost every time I play it, I cannot finish it and turn it off, crying. I play piano, and when I play this song, I sometimes can't get through it, particularly if I am home alone. It usually ends my playing session. I keep going back to it because it is a beautiful song.Give a listen, it is a great tune.
    2. I Can't Help Falling in Love with You-Elvis (the song we danced to at our wedding)
    3. Puff the Magic Dragon - believe it or not, this goes back to when I was a child and I use to think it was sad. My grandmother loved this song and she has now passsed. It just brings back memories and still makes me cry.
    4. In the Ghetto-Elvis (enough said)
    5. Don't Worry Baby-The Beachboys (good love song)
    Well, those are mine

    Hhmm

The first on my list is REM - Everybody Hurts. It was on the TV when I was told my Great Grandfather had just passed away. Hit me hard as it was the first death in my family I had ever experienced as I was pretty young at the time.

The 2nd on my list is Aerosmith - I don't want to miss a thing - One of my best friends kid brother died suddenly at the age of 17 from meningitis and when they closed the curtains for him to be cremated they played this song. Ever since his death, his family have organised a charity fund raising event which is held every year in a club with live entertainment (band plays for free etc) and the same people turn up year after year and funnily enough, it is this saturday coming.

Chris would have celebrated his 29th birthday last month.

    R.I.P kid
