My One-Year-Old Has Started Singing

I heard my one year old son singing in tune and rhythm to a jazz song, "da da da da." I thought I was imagining things, but listening closely confirmed my initial impression. My baby sings. I told my wife, but she thought maybe my ears were fooling me. But later our one-year-old sang along to another tune in front of her, "ma ma ma ma."

I guess for those of you who've had kids before or have been around a lot of infants or toddlers, this is nothing new. And it is an odd venue to discuss this, I know. This is my only child, and he is always surprising me, what can I say.

Its not an odd venue to discuss this... some have made alot of money singing, I could probably outline you 5 strategies for doing it right now. Believe in the boy!

I had a great time in the music business for years and made alot of money, but the truth is that even street singers in Nashville make 100-300 per day or so.

Anyway, the reason I believed I could play, was because some one when I was really young said "Your dad did it, so it must be in your blood", the mere suggestion of that made me believe I had some sort of inherent right to become a musician... even a "responsibility"...

So if your child loves to sing, the way to guide him to mastery without pushing is by telling him "You may have a gift for this...", and letting that seed grow at its own will... "You are the kid that started singing before he could talk" sort of thing.

If he goes that route, just wait till he sees his first "stratocaster"!

That is cool. If I had had that kind of concept instilled in me as a wee one, I'd be a diplomat. My son sure wouldn't be getting singing ability from me, that is for sure. It would have to be from his mommy who used to be a professional singer.

I have no clue if that is normal or not. But I do know that if that's his path, he's got a daddy who's well equipped to do some marketing for him.

I hope you keep us informed about how this all progresses. Maybe in a few years you'll have to move to the US so he can become the youngest American Idol.

Sure thing. I usually have to hold myself back from talking about my wee son . We just want a well-adjusted child provided with circumstances that allow him to thrive and be happy. Not sure we're aiming for a child star, lol.

You are really lucky to have a talented kid. Encourage him and train him on some form of music if possible after he is 2-3 years old. God bless your family!!!

Kids sing - it's part of kidhood. Happy kids sing and love it.

Singing is fun and toddlers have no feelings of inadequacy or self-consciousness and they don't worry about talent.

Happy kids sing. Years ago my oldest had the words memorized from two full records. His favorite was his father's Johnny Cash record.

You've never lived until you've heard a 2 yr old singing along with "frushed fom da bafwoom of your heart" (yes, unfortunately that really was a song).

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

          OMG - that's the one!

He knew the words (though not what they meant) - and if he didn't get one he'd just substitute "a-ya-ya" and keep going.

I hated that song! I kept trying to substitute Disney and kid records - but he wanted johnny cash.
