hey friends do you know How was the first dictionary made?
  • It was made in an alphabetical table by Robert Cawdrey. It was very unreliable.

Wikipedia says "produced one of the first dictionaries of the English language in 1604"

One very famous "Monk, Priest, Theologian" didn't like the fact that the Bible was so mysterious. So he decided to translate it to a standard language. ONE problem! His country didn't really have a true STANDARD language. He effectively CREATED one.(Probably cobbled together, but whatever.) His book probably became the most read book in the country. Although a lot of the language was probably familiar, I bet someone wrote dictionaries to teach everyone that new language, since it WAS a bit different. The problem? He died in 1546! It is estimated that 90-98 million people now speak the language he played a big part in. His name was "Martin Luther", and the language was "Hoch Deutsch" (High german, and effectively standard german now). Oh, and the book was obviously the lutheran bible, written 1534. The catholics wanted to keep it in Latin, at the time.

It IS interesting that wikipedia says the Duden dictionary was created in 1880, but over 300 years!?!?!? After all, a german created a printing press, and printed a bible. why not print the new bible, and a dictionary?

And let's not forget the earliest known cross reference found, the rosetta stone.

    Steve
