Hi Gary,
It's an age old question.. but to add more to it my answer would be this.

Depending upon what the current need is, so let's say for example I go to town to buy some groceries. On the way there I find that a family with 3 children just lost everything they had because of a fire and they had nothing insured.

In this case the answer is simple: I would take the $30,000 because I would not want to see a family with 3 children be homeless and I would offer $20,000 to help them out since I do have access to $30,000 right now.

On the other hand if I already had the ability to help this family without the $30,000 then my answer would also be simple: take the penny doubled everyday for 30 days.

It's strange how certain things in life can go on and change our answer to the most simplest questions.

  I would also wait 30 days for the pennys. It is the impatience of humans that cause most of us to miss out on what could be, whether it be life in general, business or anything else we bail on because it takes to long to see results. Wait and the rewards are astronomical.
