Debt collectors have come under fire for illegally menacing people behind on their bills with threats of jail. What makes this approach unusual is that the ultimatum comes with the imprimatur of law enforcement itself — though it is made before any prosecutor has determined a crime has been committed.
Do you think this should / should not be an allowable practice? And Why?

(imo - it is fraudulent and misleading. It implies they have the endorsement and enforcement of a state office they do not have, other than 'branding rights'.)

America was not created to allow for debtor's prisons. That was one of the things the forefathers wanted to remove from the lives of our people. They saw people sitting and rotting in prisons overseas just because they couldn't survive and pay debts with their kings taking ALL of their money. That is what we are seeing here now - our money is being drained as fast as they can figure out how to drain it -- and now we are going to become prisoners if we can't make enough to keep them happy.

I thought that was against the law, but a lawyer allowing it is a party to ID theft, fraud, and perjury. He should be disbarred and probably won't stay in business ANYWAY!

Just ignore the buggers, they're third party parasites looking to profit from your hardship, deal only with the original company you owe money to, you have no contractual obligation with a debt collection agency (for private consumer debts at least), they just employ cheap fear tactics in order to make a quick buck and sadly most people fall for their empty threats.
