People are crushing the DJs on social media, but if there was no tabloid culture (which most people hate) she would still be alive today.

Actions have consequences. I, for one, am sick of people in and out of the media who will do anything to get attention and never think of others they may be hurting in the process.

We don't know if this was a cause/effect but at this point it seems to be the case.

The DJs are currently off the air - which is fine with me.

If it was suicide, I'm wondering why they are calling it "mysterious".

I wonder what they said on the call that was that extremely traumatic. They said themselves that they never expected to be connected.

Sad she died but I think it was nothing to do with this and the sanctimonious rubbish on British Newspapers waffling on about blood on their hands and cruel hoax is hypocritical to say the least.

      Kate goes to hospital.

Couple of Aussie DJs decide to call the hospital and see how she is doing as a joke.

They had no idea they would be put through. Nothing cruel about it.

      This is the transcript.

Young female Aussie DJ who doesn't mention she is the Queen at all to the receptionist: 'Oh hello there, could I please speak to Kate, my granddaughter?'

Receptionist who assumed it was the Queen: 'Oh yes, just hold on Ma'am'

That was it. She then transferred the caller to the Nurses on the ward to deal with.

Nurses then gave some info on Kate.

So the DJs are now getting vile hate messages and have been told not to come into work, maybe ever again. Ludicrous.

The receptionist has two children,it's nearly Xmas, today is Friday and this was old news on Wednesday.

Still sad that she died but to blame it on the DJs as the British Press is doing is stretching it a bit far in my opinion.

        Exactly so.

As Dan explains, above, the nurse who has died in what some parts of the media are referring to as "mysterious circumstances" (though presumably suicide?) was the one who simply put the call through, not the one who inadvertently (though perhaps understandably?) breached medical confidentiality by giving out information about Kate's progress.

I haven't actually seen a newspaper, since then, but I completely agree.

"Media/press responsibility" is in the air, at the moment, with the Leveson Report so prominently in the news.

I suspect this story may have a long way to run, too. With absolutely no disrespect at all to the poor nurse who died, or to her family, I'm not sure that's necessarily a good thing.

She had two children, as well.

I know several families who have had a family member commit suicide. What that action does to the family is dreadful.

What we don't know is the mental condition of the nurse prior to the prank call. Was she bi-polar, or unipolar? What was going on in her life? She may have already been contemplating suicide, and she let this drive her over the edge.

Yes the prank was kinda stupid but jesus for starters, radio isnt real folks! The hosts play an acting role in everything they do. The producers set out their schedule for them, and now they are taking the heat when it's not even their fault.

Secondly to blame them for someone elses decisions to kill themselves is not fair. The lady was unstable and who knows what she was going through in her life....

These are the same types of morons who think TV shows are real....or that music videos are real....

      Arghhhh!
As yet we still don't know what sort of crap she got from the hospital management, so we can't say what drove her to do what she did.

The radio station in question has a long history of humiliating people in the chase for ratings.

I agree the presenters were only acting within the "rules" set down by its management. They are convenient scapegoats and the real culprits (management of the station AND the hospital) will get off scott free.

And what hypocrisy from the British press.

There are so many unanswered questions that the authorities owes the public an explanation. What was her cause of death and how certain was that caused by suicide. The hospital has denied that any action or negative feed backs were given to the nurses involved. However, we don't whether she was subjected to ridicule by other colleagues and friends.

There is almost never a single reason behind a suicide. It is possible that this joke tripped her over but there could be more underlying causes. The British press are definitely hypocrites. A lot of the stuff they print could have driven thousands to suicide.

She definitely wasn't playing with a full deck if this made her kill herself. The media is not at fault. It's not like they told her that her kids had died or something overly traumatic. Anything for a story, I guess.

      This.

      And this.

These situations are common. (Prank calls, not deaths!).

In 1995 the Queen spent over 15 minutes talking to a man she thought was the prime minister of Canada (it was actually Pierre Brassard, a Canadian radio presenter and impressionist). In 1998, Prime Minister Tony Blair took a call from a man claiming to be William Hague, leader of the Opposition (he knew immediately that it was a hoax call, because the caller - actually impressionist John Culshaw - called him "Tony" rather than "Prime Minister" - a sensible but actually mistaken guess.) The former Foreign Secretary of State Margaret Beckett thought she was taking a call from then-Chancellor Gordon Brown in 2006, but it was actually impressionist Rory Bremner. And how many hundreds more such calls from "the media"/"journalists"/"broadcasters" go unreported?

The pranks are common. What is not common perhaps, is someone with a culture/mindset of shame (undeserved) they apply to themselves after such a prank.

People react to such incidents based on their own societal/cultural belief system. If we don't understand the person, we can't judge their actions.

It seems to me the intercultural aspect of this case is being far underplayed. I don't know a lot about Indian culture and their concepts of royalty - not to mention concepts of "face" - but I'm assuming that may have somehow played a role in this; from what I've read this possibility has been largely avoided.

That said, I haven't read much on it since it first happened, so perhaps that elephant in the room has revealed itself by now?

There's no real upside to a prank call like this one - except someone having a moment's giggle at the expense of someone else. Not a big loss.

Apparently, she hanged herself and left a suicide note. The note did not mention anything about the prank call. It is looking increasingly likely that the prank has little if anything to do with it.
