What Are Your Thoughts On Using A .Org

Hey.

When using a .Org (domain name) do people expect it to be a non-profit/non-commercial website? And, what defines “organization?”

I'm building a site where most of the information is free (however we sell ebooks) and the way I look at it is that we're a hybrid of a .Org and a .Com.

What about if I contribute 10% of our profits to charity?

I wouldn't be asking but the .Com domain I want will cost me $2,500.

    I don't think too many people care about whether a .org is a non profit site.

    As the owner, though, I'd be more concerned about building a business on a .org site only to have someone in the same field take the .com and reap the benefits of my efforts.

    Not at all, these days. There are thousands and thousands of commercial sites on .org domains.

    For myself, I wouldn't want to start a business on a domain of which the .com variant already belonged to someone else, even if it's parked and/or for sale at the moment. That's all potential downside and no benefit, in the long run.

    I kinda disagree. While marketers seem to understand the difference, I think a lot of the general public does seem to think that .org is more of an organization than a business. The general public also thinks that snopes is an authority site. Marketers know much more about the little tricks on the web than the public does. When they think .org, they think of fighting gmo's, saving whales, learning science, support groups, etc. It's because I was "raised" in my online life here in the WF that I know to do due diligence to make sure the site is what they pretend to be that I know the difference.

    I've owned a .org site for years. It's a for profit site. I've never heard one word about it being .org site from anyone in all the years I've had it.

    It is an "organization" in the sense that it's intended for a very specific group, and there is a membership component for that group. Probably 99% of the content is on the inside for members. So in my case, it is a organization of sorts, but I don't think it really makes much difference these days.

      Thanks for the advice everyone. : ) I'm still in two minds as to whether to go with a .Org however providing it's still available I think I'm going to purchases the .Com (or perhaps go with another .Com).
