Is Skype subscription worth it?

I am not a frequent caller but I will call landlines in some Asian countries once in a while. I think buying credits is a bit costly but is subscription worth it? Or maybe there's a better alternative like other app or calling card?

I cannot have a land line installed as the exchange is full in my rural Spanish village. I buy Skype credit and use it for making calls around the world. The subscription plans look attractive, but if you are using it for infrequent calls, buying credit may be the better option. The credit will just sit on your account until it is used up. I find 10 Euros of credit lasts me a good while.

You can use Viber app - or VOIP app - but other party should also have it - then you get unlimited free calls as long as you have internet. That is what most people I know are using.

Skype rate is not really for Asia. I can list out bunch of apps that have cheaper rates than Skype.

Though Viber is recently acquired by Rakuten, a biggest online shopping site in Japan, Viber Out''s rate is not that friendly.

I think if you have calling destinations are Asian countries, and you call often, you should consider other VoiP apps. Idk, but amongst apps I have been trying, global call seems to have the fairest

I've never really tried other voip app aside from skype, so i'm cluelesss. I just checked out about Global call and looks like they do have low rates for asian countries, maybe i'll try this app first. I also see that they're having an event by giving out pizzas if you make a purchase but it's not available here where i live, ughh too bad.

Like with all subscriptions, it will come down to if your costs without the subscription outweigh the cost of the subscription.

I'm not a frequent caller myself, and I have a Skype number linked with my account. It helped me out a lot several times. You have to pay for the number 15 Eur every three months, and it's enough for me to have about 5 Eur on my account for essential several-minute calls every now and then. Might be not the best bargain, but it's very convenient if somebody calls me on this number, since I'm available all the time.

Skype numbers are expensive, there are some free VOIP services that offer a free phone number. eg. https://whistlephone.com (not aff link)

we also have another discussion topic in social media, which let me have closer look into a voip app named global call. they have a promotion buy 1 get 1 free right now, which can save you dozen bucks. thing is, you can top up on your prepaid phone whenever you want. sounds convenient, doesn't it?
I hope the link works: http://www.globalcall-1plus1.com/eve...n/event_w.html

I use Skype for unlimited landline calling in North America...though I think they cap you at 50 calls a day (that's plenty for me). I could get another for Australia if I needed it. It's cheap.

Sometimes it's confusing when the other party knows I'm in NC but the call comes up as from California...then I have to explain the server thing. There is a program I had for awhile that will make your # come up as a local one from a specific state or province, if you need that.

one thing I don't like about Skype is that your number would not appear on the receiver's screen. I make calls sometimes and they says they don't know it was me because my number turned into meaningless series.
since then, I started to switch to other VoiP apps. I'm currently satisfied with Global Call now.

Hm from the comments above i think that Skype will be the best option IF i'm making calls to European or American countries.
@craighawkins Hey i thought whatsapp is just for text messenging! i'll check it out with LINE too, but first
@betweenthebars so you mean they have another event aside from the pizza one? Cool, that sounds great to me. I'll check it out and maybe i'll try to make use of the 1+1 event.

I know right? God, that is so annoying. I already stopped paying for mine a while ago.

I won't recommend Skype subscription. You mentioned that you are not a frequent caller too.
I myself is still looking for a good VoIP that can suit my needs like you do. I'm making calls to my GF living in Phillipines now, my goodness they should improve their internet connection there.

We've been using free Skype calls and thanks to her internet connection our conversation is mostly "Can you hear me?" and "Hello?". I'm looking for a good app so I can call her mobile phone number.

I notice was first posted awhile ago, may I ask if you have found an app that works to call Asian countries? Thanks in advance.

I can relate with you about their internet connections there, that also is the main reason why Ive been struggling to find a good voip app. From all the suggestions on this thread, I tried ViberOut and Global Call and compared the rates, Global Call is slightly cheaper for the countries I'm calling to. I made purchase on Global Call and got my double credits, I like how it works so far and I hope it will only get better. My only regret is that i shouldve purchased more credits before joining the event knowing that i will use this app for a long time.
I would really wanna check on Whistle Phone mentioned above too but there doesnt seem to be much information the site?

I compared the rates to call Philippines for the two apps, $0.24/min with ViberOut and $0.12/min plus if I can get the double credits it will be even twice cheaper for Global Call.

I checked on Whistle Phone and even installed it on my phone, I couldn't register for some reasons, email and password not confirm-able or something like that.

So one last question, Global Call is the calling quality OK? I don't think I can handle more "Can you hear me?"s

In my opinion it is better to use Google voice for calling. Skype is good but it's quiet costly.

Good sir, thank you. I think I will install and try the app out soon. I saw that the 1+1 event is only until July 7 as well.
