List of foreign governments and organizations authorized for surveillance - The Washington Post

OK, so the other "five-eyes" nations (Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK) aren't on there, and some of the countries should definitely be on there, but are the following countries that much of a threat?

Argentina
Austria
Belgium
Brazil
Chile
Czech Republic
Denmark
Finland
France
Germany
Greece
Hungary
Iceland
Ireland
Italy
Japan
Liechtenstein
Luxembourg
Malta
Marshall Islands
Monaco
Netherlands
Norway
Paraguay
Peru
Poland
Portugal
Singapore
Slovakia
Solomon Islands
South Korea
Spain
Sweden
Switzerland
Thailand

In fact going through the list, it seems every nation except the "five eyes" are on there. Some of them, as I said, should definitely be on there (Somalia, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria, etc.), but the ones listed above? There are even small Pacific and Caribbean countries on there that pose no threat to anyone.

And Americans seem bewildered as to why their country is regarded with suspicion, if not outright hostility around the world.

(Please note that the "suspicion" and "hostility" referred to in the last paragraph is not aimed at the American people, who are probably as pissed off at what their government agencies are doing as the rest of the world is.)

"Authorized for surveillance"? Does it mean both American government and the countries above gave permission for the surveillance? or is it just from American gov?

      From the link:

This exhibit lists the 193 foreign governments as well as foreign factions, political organizations and other entities that were part of a 2010 certification approved by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

No wonder countries like Somalia, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Syria, etc. aren't in the list then. Why would they agree on NSA to do surveillance on their... less open country?

I'm not sure in the world of espionage the people doing the spying actually bother to ask the countries they wish to spy on whether they mind being spied on.

          Hence...

I might be wrong of course but it would slightly defeat the object of spying on them in the first place.

Whateverpedia, I must agree, Monaco and the Soloman Islands never struck me as a threat along with Liechtenstein and the Marshall Islands, which I ashamedly haven't heard of. I'm looking it up now.

Those countries, along with many "open countries" are on the list.

The NSA is hurting American ALLIES at a time when America likely most needs them. It is DUMB! The Germany Lower parliment only like last week CANCELLED verizon service! WHY!?!?!?!? Because Verizon helps the NSA, and they want the spying to STOP!

The Americans that are bewildered are the ones who think we are the great saviors of the world and that we should meddle in other countries affairs in our "best interest".
Then you have the Americans who still have common sense and logic and understand it's the meddling and spying that causes the suspicion and hostility.
