Ohh, ahh, that's how it starts, then there's running and screamin'

Say Hi to JIBO- the first robot companion for the home. Someone that will live with us and play with and help us. Till, of course, he becomes self-aware and tries to kill us all!

Cute idea, and a GREAT commercial, but I wonder how much they really did. ALSO, if it DOES understand english, what other languages does it understand? Yeah, I just checked the site. It says they expect to finish DESIGNING it around 9/30/2014, and have it ready to sell about a year later. It ALSO says that it is possible that not all things in the video will be there. The people are hyped up too much.

    BTW it ALSO says:

Teach JIBO to recognize your face & voice
Learn what you can ask JIBO to do

HUH? The video didn't show that! It showed a gadget UNDERSTANDING things! A person calling can only be recognized by phone number, and perhaps voice characteristics. MAYBE the person can say their name, but it must be PARSED! You can't expect all your business colleagues to give a programmed voice sample. And the face should be as simple as a picture. REMEMBER, it is supposed to recognize you from appearance And with all this, can't you ask jibo to do ANYTHING it can do? It should be SIMPLE for something that parses so well.

SO, it has this neat style(reasonable), can recognize people(Many are still getting kinks worked out, though THIS should be a BIT easier.), can move to look at things(should be EASY), can video and take snap shots(should be EASY!), can interface with your android gadgets(allowing it to search, take messages, remind you, and order for you)(The interface is easy, but the logic in between is VERY complex), and can interact with you verbally(AGAIN, to do properly is complex). . So WHAT might be missing?

I like it - lots of possibilities there. Almost an advanced form of social media interaction - except with this you don't have to be at the computer or staring at a phone ....

Yep, just wait til you are asleep, and these things will go into Dalek mode, and smother you in your sleep!

Can't wait for the corrupt version of this on Youtube!

You have a point! There is NO TELLING what might end up on android and then increase the power of this system. Maybe it could lower the garage door just before you drive your bike out for a ride! Such an ability ALREADY exists! It could lock you in the garage, and autostart your car! Is DALEK far off?

No doubt it will have some safety software built in?

            • I cannot harm any human.

            • I cannot kill any human.

            • I must save any human, unless it conflicts with the previous two laws.

            • But l can go on a killing spree, if a human on tv, says l can!

Only a matter of time before one of these things sounds like Hal, then we can get nervous. Probably auto lock all the doors and windows, and reverse the air con?

Well, for the moment, what they are advertising is a DREAM! I bet itwill be, AT BEST, like a lobotomized version of it. I could see it moving around based on triggers, and external stimuli. It will MAYBE have the video and picture ability, SOMEWHAT. It will have a clunky, as pre specified, command ability. It will tell you there is a message, and maybe show a picture, based on call id and nothing else. It will specify the appointment only if requested through that interface. I bet, if they ever DO do it in the next 2 years, I am VERY close. It won't be like an artificial pet or family member ready to talk, but an APPLIANCE waiting for a simple command.

As for the famous 3 laws? We all saw how that turned out in the novels. There have to be limits built in to weigh things to do that and I guess with that, and true AI, the breakdown of the 3 laws is inevitable. That 3rd law shows just how fragile the other two are. After all. human culture and humanity has, to a degree, had the SAME 3 laws built in, and yet a loving parent that still keeps that love may even be instrumental in killing their child. What if one child is too error prone, or even actually INTENTIONALLY threatens one or more other family members? Should a parent risk the lives of all to save one that is a danger? There have been major wars where brother has LITERALLY fought brother!

Nah, don't like it, that "thing" is freaky. Suppose it gets hacked (by whom-just use your imagination or think of current events) and goes on a rampage? No thanks.

Not suppose. It will happen. The robots are coming for us.
