What would you do? (Offline marketing quesiton)

Ok I have 6 - 8 weeks to help promote an arts festival which will be held in my local town. So it will be music, art in general, bike shows and so on, now here is the question, what would you do to gain support in that time. Please remember the population of the town is only 70k, so it isn't a huge town, this is what I thought of so far.

- Facebook
- Twitter
- Approach the local news paper
- Go to the local council and see if we can get some ads on their sites
- Mail drops
- Approaching other community organizations

Thats all I have so far, could you help with a few more strategies which could work. We haven't got a huge budget, a lot of the stuff will be word of mouth more then likely, so no PPC or huge advertising campaigns through out the town.

Thank you.

You need a local viral marketing campaign, something that will provoke local people to tell others directly or via email to do/see/visit something. I know that sounds vague. I'm still mulling it over, but I wanted to drop what I had in case it provoked any further comment.

If I think of anything genius I'll be back ;^)

Create a blog. Use wordpress to twitter plugin make sure to use hashtags. Use a social plugin, 3-5 entires a day about the activities. This could be set up in about 2 hours.

Is there any video of last years event floating around? Spread it around to the various video directories!

Print up lots flyers and ask businesses to display then in exchange for putting an ad up for their business on the wordpress site. Many businesses will have samples of ads they may have used online or in print media.

Ok so far, here is what I have planned out... We have the website or will have it up very soon. Facebook will be my main focus, 10-15 accounts and begin adding, the names will be like "artfestival2010" or something like that. Add 20 people per account per day in my area, direct them to the site, on the site will be a pop up for twitter where they can receive updates for it.

The site will obviouslly have content about the event.

Maybe some sort of rewards scheme, invite 10 people get entered into the raffle.

sounds like a great venue to show off your skills ..on line and off line .

thinking I would get the local businesses to chip in some special 'deal' for ticket holders before and after the event. Include these on the tweets, maybe even have an extra offer for retweets, send the people to your website which has links to all the local businesses who have made the offers......the local business doesnt have a website? well...you know anyone to help them out ?

great opportunity you have there .

would be great if some of the more experienced warriors would comment. sure they have more ideas.

Good idea I could have a website up for them in a day, all they would need is content. This would work good for next years one, I have already planned that out on how they can reach a lot of people but this was thrown upon me litterly today.

These are some of the ways I've promoted art shows:

    - Twitter
    - Facebook - ads, events and general posting
    - Myspace
    - posters in sponsor's locations as well as coffee shops and places where people congregate.
    - mail post cards
    - press releases
    - called local newspaper/radio/tv stations
    - submit ads (free and paid) to people with either an email or physical newsletter. Realtors and tax professionals were surprisingly receptive.
    - place a paid display ad in the newspaper
    - add event to eventful.com and other online event sites
    - submit the event info to the self-service events section of the newspapers within 100 mi
    - post on Craigslist

Local grocery stores may be willing to add a flyer that you provide as they bag groceries. It wouldn't hurt to ask.

In addition, encourage and provide tools for each participant to reach their specific audience.

edited to add: In addition, videos and either create or join a related Ning community.

Craigslist is fine if you are in the USA, unfortunately in the UK and in a town like mine, it kinda sucks because no one uses it. Thats not to say I wont put an ad on there though, just encase.

Every business has something of value. Tell them this will be Free advertising and good will for the community.

Ask the businesses for a Donation (in addition to gifts) to help promote them and the Festival.

Print up a Flyer listing the Prizes and mention the sponsors names.

Next, go to the Local Press, Newspapers, radio stations, tv, etc... and Create a great Press Release (don't beg them to advertise the event) to mention the Festival. Stress the Free Prizes, Awards, etc...

Ask sponsors to give Flyers to their customers.

All the Internet stuff will help, but I would focus more on local sponsorship, flyers, etc... most Old people don't use the Internet.

Is there a Local "Celebrity" you can get to help in your marketing efforts? Plaster their name everywhere.

Nice Yeah one of the groups which we will be targeting are the active retirement groups . We are looking to hit it at all angles, if it works well it is something which will be replicated for the summer and next year .

You may already be aware but it's against the TOS to have more than one Facebook profile. I don't see the benefit of setting up 15-20 for a single event. I create a fan page for each event and a profile and/or fan page for any participants that aren't on Facebook. I don't include a year in the fan page because I build on the fan base for subsequent events. Ping.fm and Socialoomph are helpful in keeping everything updated.

IF it's not cold there, Pay $100 to a cool chick to walk with a big card In a bikini, of course.

If that's too front forward to you, pay some artist to do same thing on a bike, or something really weird.

In a small community, it works. You'll get your message spread.

Oh and of course, local newspapers, radios, universities etc

I have been thinking about this, and I see AP has already talked about offering a prize. I know that laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction but they are often flexible when it comes to non-profit organisations doing prize draws.

What I was thinking was to have some prize. You submit your email to be eligible to win the prize. But here's the viral part. You have to say who referred you to submit your email, and you can refer others. You get one shot at winning for every person you refer. So if you refer 100 people, you get 100 chances at winning. Everyone will be motivated to tell their friends so they get more chances to win.

Then do a countdown email say 7-10 days before the event. Every day email the list with "6 days left...", "5 days left..." etc... and include some news about the event. By D day there should be lots of anticipation and everyone in town should know about it.

I'd suggest developing a prescense in your local town forums. Create a profile and have a signature promoting the event. Heck, get on the forums and ask local people to help you. Say something that appeals to them, and can get them invested in helping your cause.

I think raffles and prizes is a great idea too!

wanted to expand a little on the comments made...

I have used the coupons that the merchants are all ready using from newspapers, flers, val pak, etc ...just call them up and ask if it would be ok to dispense their coupons for FREE...none will say no .

    use these are the 'draw'

also, over the top on the street advertising as mentioned,, give everyone who attends a free caricature, big red nose , something...free handwriting analysis...use the crafts people's skills on the street...people love those kind of things

obviously need a free hot dog for all attendees ..or whatever it is you guys in the UK would substitute...what is it ? kidney pie or something ?

do like burger king...get them to turn in their friends for a buck or euro or pound...then use the local coupon to fulfill the request.

heck, the more I talk about it, the more I think I will call the local tourism board and see what they have.

    good luck .

What about tying into the big event of the week, Haiti?

Seriously donate a certain percentage of ticket sales to a local non profit that supports Haiti and say hello to free press. Not to mention that but do you know that local radio is required to give free airtime to non profits? So why not make up a radio spot and then have them play it on the radio in the free time they are required to give.

Also what about contacting a PR firm - I'm sure they'd love to help a good local cause that toots their horn.

Also treat it like a launch...
Get affiliates to help you out:
And by affiliates I mean kids...

    ... That you outsource to
    handout flyers at different neighborhoods...
Different color flyer to keep track of which kid

invited who-Put some sort of coupon
for your booth in the back of the flyer
    so the people keep them...

... And use them when they come to the
    festival...

    Stickers.

Bright color background. High contrast text on it.

Print them up with something abiguous to generate interest for those who don't know about the event ... and simultaneously make the people who do know about it feel "cool/hip/in-the-know"

Picture bright pink rectangle sticker (small, like business card sized) with black text...

"YOU CAN'T STOP US. WE'RE COMING" (big)
    "21st of Feb" (small)
"Learn more on Twitter: MyArtShow or www.MyArtShow.org" (smallest)

I'm not a copywriter and I'm only giving a 20 second example but you get the idea.

Maybe just the twitter name and rip the content out so they have to discover whats up be keeping an eye on your tweets (if they don't already know).

    Cheap to print.
Splat them around in high traffic areas like bus stops.
Lil but guerilla depending on where you stick 'em.

    Cheers.

Considering its a small town, the residents are probably old school...

Meaning print advertising is the way to go...so put an advertisement in the most popular print advertiser which will more than likely be the town's newspaper...in your ad I would put all the normal promo details but include your website and facebook page that you are promoting online for additional virality (new word I think..lol).

Don't forget the Press Releases. Write one, or get it written and publish it to PR sites. However, before you begin writing one, make sure you read through the somewhat stringent requirements of the site you will be submitting. Press releases typically follow a pre-determined format. Familiarize yourself with it to save trouble later.
