Webdesign vs Redesign?

When you do a redesign for someone do you normally charge what you would for web development or would you charge a different fee?

Thanks in advance.

It's a case by case decision based upon how much work we need to do. There's no set answer.

    I agree with Bradley.

Sometime my clients mistake what a redesign is... they asked to convert magento to wordpress. That's not a "redesign" in my book.

And yea, I charge them for how much work that needs to be done. If it's simple website they want to convert to a wordpress, it won't cost too much.

Because the internet has been around for an entire generation, there are millions if not billions of websites out there that are behind the curve. I cannot tell you how many websites I come across that are good intentioned but are built around basic HTML that was only popular in 1992. In 1992, I was 11 years old and nothing that I was wearing in 1992would I be wearing today. Website owners should feel the same away about their websites. Many designers are still approaching website changes as redesigns, with little thought to whether they should be redesigning or realigning the site for their clients.

Offering just one thing helps, not trying to take on every job, just leads to tons of work. e.g. client must switch to wordpress and a theme you like for conversions.

So there are 4 possible scenarios:

      1. Client is on Wordpress and has acceptable theme (no need to do anything)

      2. Client is on Wordpress with crap theme (switch theme easy)

      3. Client is on random system, switch to Wordpress and a good theme

      4. Client doesn't want to switch to Wordpress or the theme you suggest (fire them)

The other option is to split test the results of their proposed layout and your own. But most of the time when they don't want to listen it's best to just let go.
