Marketing Tip For Linked In

As I'm looking through linkedin groups I'm noticing something. I wanted to point it out here so you guys could really benefit from. So, I go into a group and I notice a post from a small business owner. He threw out a bone that put the sharks in the water. How can I grow my small business? That was basically his question. He gets 30 something posts on your website sucks, use facebook, use twitter, etc.

Here is a way you can really set yourself apart. Ask them questions and get them to tell you what they want. Facebook, Twitter, Websites, etc are all just tools. What the guy in this example was missing was what most small businesses are lacking. The one thing that is incredibly important and makes all of these tools way more effective. The Value Proposition. The value proposition simply put is one sentence that tells exactly what the client does. I look at websites all the time that just don't even explain what people do. But, all of these people on linked in were too busy pitching him gimmicks and tools to use. I'm an old school guy. I market and teach marketing based on principles. Those principles apply no matter what tools come available. (Facebook, PPC, Twitter, Etc)

To sum up:
1. Ask the business owners questions about their business. Get them to tell you where they need help. Don't just pitch stuff to them.
2. Make sure they have a clear value proposition. If not get them in one sentence to sum up what they do. Use that to set themselves apart from the competition.

    Hi

Here are five ways to get the most out of LinkedIn Groups.

    1. Extend relationships with your in-person networks. The first groups to join are those you belong to offline. For instance, become a member of your university’s LinkedIn alumni group, any corporations where you’ve worked, any professional or trade associations you belong to and any non-profits where you volunteer.
    2. Be an industry insider. Next, join groups related to your industry (or the industry you want to join if you’re a recent grad or career changer). You’ll stay up to date on important industry issues, must-read articles and other hot topics.
    3. Lurk first. In any group, your best bet is to “lurk” first without commenting to get the lay of the land. Check out what topics receive the most comments. Look to the “Top Influencers This Week” area to see which members are driving conversation. Visit the “Manager’s Choice” discussions, where the group’s manager has elevated certain conversations that he or she feels are most important for members to view.
    4. Demonstrate your expertise. After lurking for a little while, dive in! Discussions are a fantastic place to be visible and highlight your skills and expertise to a broad audience. You can answer a question, add your opinion to a discussion, share advice with someone seeking help, comment on a posted article or all of the above.
    5. Create one-on-one networking opportunities. In addition to engaging publicly in groups, you can also use group discussions to build or enhance one-on-one relationships. Let’s say you’re scanning discussions in an industry group and you come across a comment that’s strongly related to your interests or expertise. In addition to posting a comment publicly, you can take the opportunity to reach out directly to the person who posted the discussion.
    Cheers

Interesting post and something that people really ignore. I've gotten into a habit of asking a question on my social circles, specifically Linkedin, and throwing out a carrot or 2 to get business owners biting.
