And you say you can't make one phone call...

I just received word that my buddy's world record is official. He sent along this:

"The most consecutive boxing rounds is 120 and was achieved by David Smith (Australia) at the Holy Trinity Church Hall in Dulwich Hill, New South Wales, Australia, on 1 April 2012."

This was sent to him by the Guiness organization.

Dave is an Anglican priest who happens to be the parish priest for one of the toughest sections of Sydney. He is world renown in boxing plus persona non grata in several countries for his peace activities.

He was just in the U.S. to be in one of his parishoner's corner for a title fight. He also knows more about the Civil War than 99% of Americans.

What does all this have to do with WF members?

Dave never stops learning. He never lets an excuse stand in his way. He believes he can do it if he simply takes the first step.

Dave also is responsible to raise money for his parish. He is levied that responsibility by his church hierarchy. For example, he just got word he has to raise $10000 in 2013 for his Youth Center.

The money he raised by boxing 120 consecutive rounds went to that same capital campaign for 2012. He got out of bed and made a phone call, metaphorically speaking to raise that money.

I'm not saying box even one round. I'm saying get out of bed and take action. My God, imagine what you could do if you just do it.

Yep, you've heard that message before but you haven't heard about Father Dave unless you read some of my previous posts. I also wanted the few of you on this forum who know Dave to know the record was finally recognized.

Have a great day,

Tom

  • when I was doing insurance had a great learning experience (told from a colleague who said he was there and it was factual)

a professional football player, very good player, retired.

    went into the insurance business.

1st day was to take a list of prospects and call them up.

it's not like your physically being hit on the field, or working out 6 days a week, getting concussions, broken bones, etc..,

and a top athlete at the height of fame, fortune, and prestige. A real Man!

    he could do anything right...

...but he couldn't make 1 call.

    and we can.

      Got bad news for him.

Record is 123 rounds and was set on 20th October 2012, 2 months ago, in Ireland.

It was a Fight4Life help KO Cancer thing and raised 30,000 Euros.

Maybe Guinness should have got their finger out sending him the certificate rather than sending him one that is already obsolete by the time he received it.

But as Guinness is Irish like Gerry Cronelly maybe they did it as some kind of Irish joke.

Best tell your buddy to get his gloves back on.

Yep, maybe. Never know about those pesky Irish .

BTW, my youngest son lived and worked in Northern Irelad for a little under fifteen months. He was employed in a call center for a large grocery chain. When people called in they would always ask for the American. Certainly had some stories.

Dave is aware of Cronelly's feat and probably will challenge him to a match with the funds going to their respective charities. Dave told me he'd like to make it a last man standing match. Now that my friend would be worth a trip to OZ to see.

Personally I'd like to see Dave box a Brit. Oh wait, they couldn't last two rounds against someone from OZ

Anyway, both gentlemen deserve our sincerest respect for what they did. Neither did it for themselves but for a cause.

And there are still people who can't make one phone call, hmmmm...
