"Here's why I don't do SEO for my offline clients..."

Hey,

Do you still offer seo as one of your main services?

If so, how's that working out for you.

I actually gave up on seo as a main service offering last year. It just wasn't consistently generating enough paying customers quickly enough for my offline clients.

Oh yeah, just to be clear. I'm talking about gaming the system to get higher natural search engine rankings.

Maybe I just stunk at it, but at the end of the day, I simply didn't enjoy all of the work I had to put into it just to stay in the game.

I'd much rather focus on putting out good, relevant content that readers will actually enjoy, like, share and tweet.

Yes, I know that there are SEO wizards out there who can rank a one-page website for any term, without even having any content on the page, but that's not me.

Plus, if your clients are anything like mine, they want paying customers more than they want teets, likes or shares.

So, at this stage of my business, any seo results or natural rankings I achieve for my clients is simply a byproduct of my direct online marketing efforts.

After all what good is investing $2,000 with me if it doesn't get my clients any paying customers for months at a time?

I felt like a crook when I had to tell my clients to keep waiting and that it doesn't work overnight (or even overmonth).

Of course their intellectual mind knows that, but deep down they still want paying customers today.

Of course there is the rare exception when a client just wants branding only advertising to get their name out there.

However, that is not the norm.

My main issue with focusing on natural search engine rankings as a main service is that it's just too unpredictable. I had Google hitting my clients website rankings with some new algorithm every few months.

Sure, I can beat the search engine ranking system today, but what about tomorrow or the day after that?

For the most part, our clients only love us because we continue to get them paying customers and clients. That's the long and short of it.

The day I stop getting results for my clients is the day that I deserve to be fired. It's that simple.

Now, that's not to say that I'm bashing SEO, Google, Bing or any other search engine for that matter. It's just that I personally don't offer it as main service anymore.

- I still teach my clients to put out quality content that their target market would find useful.

- I still teach my clients that they have to optimize their website and webpages for relevant keywords.

- I still teach my clients to do backlinking from relevent websites because it's the smart thing to do.

None of that's changed.

However, after 10+ years of playing the search engine game, I realized that I have more fun and get better results doing "offline" offline marketing and paid advertising for myself and my clients.

I'm talking about the good old fashioned ad buys and ad placement, direct mail and database marketing stuff.

How about you?

Are you still offering "get on the first page of Google" services?

Chris

Even if SEO is what you sell, that's not "really" what you should be selling.

You should be selling them more customers, clients, patients, money etc

I believe SEO has become such a hassle, with every algorithm update, with so much competition, that it won`t worth doing as a main activity shortly. And people will become educated to post relevant, original content, than to ask for some overnight miracled, that will disappear most likely at the next G update.

Word of mouth marketing is the way to go. I totally agree with you, offline marketing is where I focus my attention. Gone are those days when you get surfers storming your website from search engines.

      It's always going to be relevent. Just the way you go about ranking is going to change. The days where you can just blast 10,000 links to a page and expect climbing in the rankings are gone. That doesn't mean there isn't and won't be a huge need for people who can;

      A) Write great content to target long-tail keywords
      B) Design search engine optimized websites
      C) Integrate social media

      Etc, etc

The above are just 3 examples of work that will always need to be done, and is all related to search engine optimization.

This is exactly what Google wants anyway. Pay to play. SEO simply provides Google with a weekly or daily mental/physical workout. They'll always allow SEO to play in their playground. It helps to keep them on their toes

    HI there,

We sell value. By that I mean for the services we offer we also offer the value of customer-creation, or lead-generation. Paraphrasing the OP, getting to top of Google really means nothing in the scheme of things if you're not converting leads to dollars.

We don't promise anything to do with search engines. We promise qualified prospects. That's what we sell and that's what we deliver, and that's what we get paid very well for.

    All the best,

    Sasha.

      You're all on drugs...

You go tell MY clients that SEO is a 'hassle' or 'dying'. They'll laugh in your face with me.

I have a dentist netting 75k/mo from organic traffic. And the numbers are only going up...

      And this...lol....This one is my favorite;

Gone are those days when you get surfers storming your website from search engines.
You're kidding right? PLEASE sell me whatever it is that you're smoking.

Great points Chris. You make a great point b/c at the end of the day, hard core business owners' that speak the language of return on investment, profit, units sold and etc. aren't gonna be changing their language to seo or rankings anytime soon.

We've gotta speak their language and adopt it as our own; which means a shift towards doing things that translate to tangible results - in "dollars and cents".

We sell our clients CUSTOMERS and that's it. We get those customers however we can, mail, SMS lead-gen G+, SEO.... whatever.

When speaking to clients and prospects, I never say the term "SEO". I say "customers" because at the end of the day, that's ALL my clients give a damn about.

It really is of no consequence HOW I get them those customers.... I just do it.

I think that's the part if the "pitch" lots of "offliners" miss.

I'd buy ads on blimps if that's what I had to do. In the end, if you send a warm body with money to spend through your client's door and that person turns into a CUSTOMER, your client will happily PAY YOU.

The problem is that most people offer just SEO to businesses. SEO is a small part of the pie, especially for local businesses. In my experience, any type of internet marketing ONLY is not good for local businesses. Traditional works better. SEO is better for businesses with a bigger market than local ones.
