You might find that your partition table is messed up from all the formatting, however, how to fix this outside of Linux is beyond me. Sorry don't use Windows really. But looking into your partition table might be an idea, It's why I couldn't get my computer to boot from a certain partition

Found the issue resolve on HP site: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...=1842155#N1029

Other potential issues when downgrading from Vista to XPDisabling the native-SATA settings to recognize the hard drive may be only the first of several issues you will have to resolve when downgrading from Vista to XP. HP does not recommend downgrading your Vista operating system. HP does not supply drivers needed to control newer components with an older operating system.

Well basically the partition was ext3. But it kept telling me that it wasn't and I couldn't boot from it.

You could try booting into linux and running gparted (it should have it) or you can use another partitioning tool. You could try just reformatting and see if it works.

There's a tool called fdisk, it's a command line application and you can us it to edit hte partition table. Find out what ID the partition has and see if that maps to what it is actually formatted to.

Are you sure that the Windows XP CD you are using is an actual Operating System installation CD and not just an installer that was meant to be used to install Windows from a special partition on your hard disk?

Most notebooks no longer come with an OS CD, rather they have a CD or DVD that either has an image of the installation (OS plus all the software bundled with the notebook) or that points to an image that is on another partition of your hard drive.

By formatting the drive you may have inadvertently removed the installation partition.

    Just a thought.

I think that your BIOS must have configured your disc as AHCI disc. Try to change it to IDE mode. These settings can be found under Hard Disc section. Windows XP CD does not contain any AHCI drivers. If you change it to IDE mode, you will be able to detect the hard disc during installation. Do let me know if this helps you.
