I need a forum application that will incorporate with the design of our site. Preferably one that integrates with mysql database to keep track of sign ups, and has a user friendly back end.

Ideas???

I have used phpbb in the past which is an excellent forum that uses php and MySQL. The other forum software that I see in use a lot is VBulletin which also uses a similar platform.

Mostly all forum platforms can conform to your original site layout.....

The key difference when looking for a forum software is what features you want to get from it.... IE do you want your users to have there own blogs and have the ability to join groups or customize there profile page like a social site.... stuff like that or is it just going to be strictly a forum just to post topics and reply.....

Everything you want to accomplish in a forum you should right down then go looking for the forum platform that fits your need and not a over blown forum software where you conform to its needs..

I don't think you should be looking at a forum but rather a framework that you can add different applications to. Have you considered Django?

Use PHPBB3, far better than Vbulletin.

Another one you can check out, which I think is also quite good is Vanilla. Collis Ta'eed at FreelanceSwitch.com is using it.

If all you want is a powerful forum, then many of the above items will work great (SMF, VB, PHPBB, etc.). Just look them over and go with the one that you feel most excited about.

However, if you want to include other functionality (blog, ecommerce, SEO, etc.), then you probably want a good CMS (content management system)

I really love Drupal (drupal.org) - world class software, free, with tons of support and modules. I could spend days crawling through the hundreds of modules that are freelay available, and tons of themes as well...

The forum in Drupal is relatively simple, but the abililty to create actual Web Applications and comprehensive user managed websites is a powerful combination.

I am using a very old version of MyBB but highly modified and customized.

It is really easy to understand and a good script.

If you want free I would suggest PHPbb. If you want paid, go for IPB ( has great design ), vBulletin ( has great plugin manager ).
