All what Google have said is not always the case..

A lot of site will still seat comfortable on the first page of Google without any mobile version.

For mobile search, I doubt it.

If your sites depend on mobile traffic, you would be a brain dead moron not to pay attention to this.

    Thanks for the heads-up GDF.

Yeah, it always looked likely they might do something like that, considering the popularity, not to mention the current size of mobiles.

My view is it will not be a very big factor, and my reasoning is why should it?
because there are some websites (including a few of mine) that are very rarely ever receive visitors from mobiles for the simple reason that the subject matter is not something that would be viewed and read by folks on mobiles, and more especially subjects that interest the older generation, or folks generally who spend all day at home.

Maybe Big G will come up with some way around this, but I'm not holding my breath.

It is not going to be a ranking factor for non-mobile search. It will be a ranking factor for mobile search.

Ah right, thanks Mike, come to think of it, put like that, it's obvious to anyone with their brain in gear

I'm sure it won't be long before deadly SEO rumours start spreading.

The bottom line is that if you rely on mobile traffic you won't get any if Google penalizes you for not having met it's mobile friendly criteria. You won't be ranked during a search on a mobile device only on a desktop search. The choice is yours but I agree with the post above that you should be targeting all traffic for better roi.

In these days mobile is the major important for browsing websites. Wordpress already had mobile friendly themes and hope other CMS too have.
Every site owner moves to the new version according to the Google Algorithms.

Wouldn't matter much to people who are trying to target desktop users.

SEO wise it coudn't hurt to diversify.
