The WordPress support page for this topic says that setting your domain's site visibility to discourage search engines does just that.

Google and the other major search engines respect the setting so you shouldn't get indexed by them.

Remember to change it back to visible once you want your site to get crawled again.

This is what I meant , not the entire site , just a page or a post, I want them to be indexed but I want them to be private . Thanks Mike

Sorry - misunderstood the original question.

Just checked on a couple of my blogs:

One with Yoast's SEO plugin installed set the private page to noindex, follow
One without that installed didn't set the meta tag

So the answer is the usual computer "it depends".

If you've got Yoast or anything similar installed, you can over-ride what seems to be the default "noindex" for individual pages in the Advanced tab. You'd need to check what happened in the site map.

Of course, you'll need to create some way for Google to know the pages exist - site maps, links, that kind of thing.

It indexes and then, if it shows it, it says something about robots not letting it display description. But if you click on the url, you can visit the page.

Private post do not get indexed as they are meant for internal use.

As others have mentioned, these will normally get indexed still, unless you have something in the htaccess or robots file that tells it not to be indexed. Your title will still show up in the search results, but there probably won't be a description, and obviously users will still be told it's private if they click.
