SEO For A Copywriting Business

Hi,

So - I've been a full time freelance copywriter/writer for nearly a decade. I've worked with some HUGE blogs, websites, and am even a published author/optioned screenwriter.

Here's my problem though...

I am constantly chasing down leads and relying on "word of mouth" and return clients. I just recently registered a domain, formed a LLC, etc. In other words, I'm ready to start an actual business versus being a freelancer. Does anyone have any tips as far as optimizing my site for SEO? Should I target long-tail keywords? I'm afraid if I do this that I'll limit myself to one area versus people all across the country/world.

Also - is it going to be worthwhile to try to target highly competitive keywords such as "affordable copywriting" or should I put more effort into something like PPC? Manual forum promotion? Build a list? What?

Any advice is much appreciated as this will be my FIRST time venturing into the wild and wonderful world of SEO (for myself at least) and I don't want to cut corners. I'm not starving by any means and am more than willing to put in the time it takes to make this work. Thanks in advance warriors!

It's a tough niche, but you should be able to crack it.

Start by setting up a site targeting the top terms, built out with some solid content. You should then create a blog targeting extremely longtail terms, and providing copywriting tips. This will be the longterm though, so slow and steady will win the race eventually for you.

Once you have a content offering built out, start running some SEM campaigns, but forum promotion would be your best bet for immediate business. These sorts of forums are where your target marketing will mostly be. Make sure you have an offering to suit them, and work out your USP (unique selling point) so that you have something to say why you are better than the other copywriters. Reliable? Fast? Quality? Cheap?

      Thanks for the advice!

I'll definitely take all this into consideration (and a blog is a great idea).
