My site is like a 1920's home that's been remodeled 30 times... How to organize?

Hi Guys,

My site literally reminds me of a home that was built in the 1920's and then there's been tons of improvements, changes and additions over the past 100 years.

I finally got it where I want it but it's completely unorganized, tons of files everywhere, tons of old ones that I don't use or need anymore.

I even have a few pages that have poor design and still get some small amounts of traffic so I don't want to delete them.

Overall, I'm afraid of deleting anything because I'm afraid it will affect my traffic in a detrimental way.

On some of these old pages, that aren't intended to be up, how do you keep the traffic and direct them to your new areas within the site, even if you eliminated the information from the new areas?

It's a headache but at the end of the day, I may be thee only one thats bothered by this..

How would you organize this? Would you delete those old pages eventhough they still get minimal traffic?

What would you recommend?

Thanks!

JT

  • You can reorganize by creating category menus and changing pages to posts. You can create a 301 redirect (permanent) from the old page to ensure you don't lose any traffic.

If you’re trying to re-organize your website, you might want to look at reverse engineering your competition.

What I love about reverse engineering is that you’re letting your competition do your homework for you.

The best part about this is that they don’t even know it.

You have to understand that regardless of which niche you’re in, there will always be other websites and other companies that arrived before you.

In other words, they had the first shot at the problem that you’re trying to fix.

This is a tremendous competitive advantage, as far as you’re concerned.

You pay attention to what they’re doing right and you try to fix what they’re doing wrong.

In other words, you leverage their strengths and you try to avoid their weaknesses.

Since you’re re-modelling or re-structuring your website, it’s important to look for how your higher [rank] or better performing competitors are doing and see if you can come up with a similar structure or at least learn from their strengths.
