I'm Thinking About Getting Back into SEO Again - is backlinking dead?

I work in the IT industry and my wife has a business of her own.

We're thinking about doing SEO as a side business while she quits her own business.

I've done SEO for various clients for about five years (on the side) and took a three year break. Just curious if backlinking is dead - in a weird way - I hope it is.

So that is my question. Is backlinking dead?

  • Backlink is not dead. And "content is king, link is queen" is still right until now

You would have to be an idiot to believe that content is king.

Back links are the number one ranking factor. That has not changed.

Do you really understand what a king mean ? Have you ever played chess ?
The no1 position on search engine have no meaning if your content is rubbish. That why it is king

So you're going for some kind of over-extended metaphor here? King is a piece that moves really slowly, is a pain in the arse, and that you have to have an army to protect. Not sure how this relates to website content.

Except that it seems to be painful for many site owners.

Err... That makes absolutely no sense at all. If you're number one for something that people actually search for there's potential for that page or site. If it's number one it seems to fit the search even if it's crap from your point of view.

There's all kind of content that's rubbish but ranks very well. Just a random example: a web design company made a "soundboard" of the grunts of a famous local rapper. You basically click a button and the site says "argh" or "ahhh". You know, much like like James Hetfield always says "yeah". I don't have screen caps or anything, but I'm pretty sure that stupid thing ranked high back in the day.

Of course it's easier to rank with a good content in most cases. I'm not trying to deny that.

Yes, it is slowly but when you loose your king, you're a loser. A king (content) don't have power like a queen (backlink) but as I said, people will leave your website on No1 if it's not suit their need, and ranking on No1 mean nothing

I don't know why you say that is potential for that site. It makes website have high bounce rate. It is not targeted traffic, so you don't have any leads or sales from that traffic. Except for you want this traffic for fun

I can't follow any of that. People will leave what where? Isn't that the job of, you know, Google search algo?

The claim that ranking #1 means nothing is especially confusing.

Are you talking about site that just happens to rank #1 for an unrelated search phrase? Yeah, that doesn't really work, but it's pretty rare for popular search phrases nowadays. It's hard to spam your way to the top for something completely unrelated.

And it's not really what I'm talking about. My example was about crap content that has some kind of context. There's a reason why it ranks.

That's why content is King. If you depend on it, you're results are going to come slowly, and very painfully.

            Links = supreme.

Content doesn't matter if it isn't ranking, and content won't rank on it's own without the domain having lots of links. All roads point to building more links, whether it's to game the search engines, or pull traffic from other sites -- it all starts with a link.

You can have the greatest content in the world, but if you don't link to it, nobody will find it -- through the search engines, or otherwise.

This shows what I don't like in this "content is king" metaphor. Kings are leaders that get their mandate from god(s). Kings do not rely on some real-world external reason to be important. Sure, it's all a metaphor, but there's so much to SEO that I don't find these kind of simplifications adequate.

What about your web tech? Is it the jester? Is internal linking the prince, or perhaps a dragon?

Another reason for me to dislike "king" is that content that ranks can be just some scribbling that you would've seen on a toilet wall just couple of decades ago. Just look at Tumblr.

So if backlinking is still alive - can you give a couple examples of where I can backlink from - for an example - perhaps Tumblr?

You should read more about "link juice", "private blog network", "page authority", "domain authority", "trust flow", "citation flow" before building your backlink.
I see people build backlink on their Tumblr, but is it not effective. After understanding "link juice" , you will not build backlink on your Tumblr.

Why do you think you should go into SEO if you don't even know the basics of it?

SEO is the only business in which someone who knows nothing about it opens up a company and the next day calls themselves a professional.

To answer your initial question, your wife should go start working for a real SEO/Ad company. She should start at the bottom and work her way up, actually LEARNING the trade. In 5 or 6 years she can start to think about a company of her own.

OR, you and her can just start a company now, outsource to Fiverr, and come to this forum to ask if Tumblr is good for backlinking...

        Your example is awful.

Content is important for conversions. It is a lot less important for rankings.

You can rank a blank page if your links are good.

i disagree , content also need to be good that user likes and engage.. when some user clicks on your site results on google search and browse ur site but if the content is not good enough its obvious the user will go away quite quickly and google also considers that if user clicks and goes into this site , then how much time it spent on that particular site.... if users stays and browses ur site for more time then next time ur result will be shown upper than others

Backlinking makes SEO easier. Learn backlinking/building PBNs.

Backlinking is more important than content for ranking but content is more important for sales (converting a visitor into profit)

Web tech would definitely be the jester ;D So easy to troll when you're writing the code.

I'm with you on the metaphor being played out. I was being sarcastic in my post. I'd say SAPE links are the dragon, and internal links are the prince and princess -- the king & queen make them stronger.

Woot, should be a fiction writer ;D Hope your day's good!

Backlinks are not dead at all and carry a huge amount of weight still.

However what has changed is the fact that backlinks now only get you to the first page, they don't keep you there.

    Engagement signals do that.

Guys, looking at your discussion I sometimes think that the ranking is your goal itself. jvzooreviewdotnet is right. You can use backlinks and get #1 pretty fast. But if your content is a total crap you'll just get 100% bounce rate and no conversions. So, what is your end goal? I don't get it...

Content, links, keywords, design, traffic etc., are all essential part in SEO.
Backlinks doesn't make SEO as whole, but backlinks with content, traffic, keywords, title, audience and everything that makes a website even the littlest things are important.
