    Hello Nancy,
External Links are hyperlinks that point at (target) any domain other than the domain the link exists on (source) whereas internal links are hyperlinks that point at (target) the same domain as the domain that the link exists on (source).

Internal Link - A hyperlink that links to another page on the same website.
External Link - A hyperlink that links to another website.

Links redirects a website to its own pages are called Internal Links and Links redirects to any other website are called External Links. Internal linking is advised for better Search Engine Optimization results as External Links are to be kept at minimum because search engines do not like lot of outgoing links from a web page.

There are a lot of good answers that make sense. So I thought it would add more vale to share why it is important for you to use internal and external link in your content to better your seo and traffic.

In the eyes of google, if your website just links to itself, then its a black hole that suck people in.

If you add external links then you are sharing third party information like blog posts and videos that give more content. Thus google will trust your site more.

If you are posting on websites like youtube or facebook (websites that have an interest in keep people on their site) then you want to link internally because youtube wants to keep people on their site no matter what.

So by posting a youtube video with a few links to other related videos or your own video will show the YT robots that you have SOMETHING to keep people in the site. Even if the link is at the very bottom.

This is a great question. I certainly didn't know the difference when I began using the internet for marketing.

Hope this helps your internet purposes.

    Have a great day.

Internal links, defined as links that point from one page on your site to another, are far from unimportant. They provide the user experience within your website – the structure that helps your users easily find what they’re looking for on your site. And the search engines heavily favor a clear hierarchy in a website’s link structure.

External links are defined as links from one site to another. They can be outbound external links, where you link on your neighborhood or community page, for instance, to key businesses in that area, or relevant community news sources.
