Hey, I was wondering how important it is to have your own domain. I recently started up on blogger.com and am wondering if having my own domain would get me a higher PR, or produce other benefits.

Thanks.c

Well, for one, your site won't ever get shut down if you have your own domain.

Many more reasons to have your own domain but, to me, that's the main one-- I am in control, not someone else.

    Whatever you decide, best wishes

    Warmly,

Try exceeding your bandwidth or process limits regularly and see what happens.

Try forgetting to renew your domain registration and see what happens.

Get enough spamming complaints and see what happens.

There's always a worse case scenario that can get your shut down. But people around here tend to greatly exaggerate getting shut down on Blogger.

In fact, some blogs actually are better to have on Blogger than on a shared hosting account. For example, there are blogs that follow popular TV shows like Lost, American Idol and Big Brother that would be shut down on a standard shared hosting account but Blogger doesn't mind them at all.

You're right-- it's indeed possible to get a hosting account shut down.

Probable? Not really. I mean, you'd have to be doing some pretty stupid stuff to get shut down. And, if you're going to be that stupid, you're going to get shut down no matter what you do, especially at blogger etc.

I don't know why a shared hosting place would care about a blog about a popular tv show and why it would shut it down? That doesn't make sense to me but perhaps I'm missing something?

Crushing sudden bandwidth usage that kills a shared server and maybe routers, switches and other network hardware.

While many hosting companies advertise "unlimited bandwidth" they really mean that you're OK as long as you only get a few 100 hits a day and don't hog processor resources with scripts. But, if you get 500K hits in an hour because the Island blows up or someone gets kicked off the reality show they aren't going to like it.

This is a good place to learn for free, but you don't have any ownership and could lose all of your work very easily. If your going to do SEO and put any effort into the site, then spend the money and get your own domain through someone like hostgator, or godaddy. You will be happy you spent the couple bucks a month to do it.

Yeah, good point. Never thought of the chance that it could get taken down after all the work I would put in to SEO. Guess its worth the small investment .

I think too many people confuse blogger with the free hosted wordpress and think
they are the same. Not true. Blogger gives you adsense revenue and a power
house like google to give some juice. Just do a google search for specific blogs
and see how many blogspots fill the top 10.

In another thread, I did an example of a search for obama blog on google.
      Half were blogspots.

Now if you want to have your own domain, that's cool too. Does your own
domain look more professional? On blogger, I can't see the difference if
done properly. I have seen lousy free ones and lousy domains.

Yes, there are probably more lousy free blogs, but that's the nature of
      "free."

With blogger you can use your own domain.
so you don't get the blogspot in the address.

You can get them to look quite nice:
        Make Money Online

I can't imagine bloggger shutting down as it has Google resources behind it.

As well the issues already mentioned with self-hosting ... you can get hacked... like I have experienced with shared hosting. Someone injected Javascript and totally "crashed" all my sites... it took weeks to get right.
        Very painful.

With self-hosting you can auto-blog and use all the plugins like wp-o-matic, wprobot, phpbay, etc..

It all depends on what you want to do.

    Hi,

I highly recommend your own domain name for obvious reasons but take adavantage of the fact that with blogger its free. Its a sub domain but it still effective and you can have as many as you want.

I recommend for the beginners to start at bloggers first to enhance skills
The good thing of having your own domain is that
I am in control, not someone else.
I agree with that. Both can have profits. And regarding your PR, all you need is a good content.

well, that my perception. It's really your own choice. Both are profitable and enjoying. Blogging can also make money but over all, having a domain can make more money. As long as you write a very good content using the right keywords.

    Thank you.
