Google XML Site Map vs Google Index in Search Console

Hello,

In search console it shows:
Crawl>SiteMaps
Submitted 250,000, Indexed 25,000

But when you go to Google Index > Index Status > it says total indexed 800,000

1. What is difference between XML site map Indexed pages vs Google Index within Search Console?

2. What does it mean when googled Index pages are more than site map pages?

3. Lastly, does it mean if 25,000 pages indexed out of 25,0000 submitted, but if google is showing also in index 800,000, that the "important" pages within the site map may actually not be indexed within google itself, and the 775,000 (800,000 indexed of the 25,000 submitted), that these pages could be "junK" pages, i.e. junk = pages with canoncical issues or have query paramters
What's the reason for discrepancy?

XML Sitemap and Google Indexing are two Different things but these are correlated with each other

If you Submit the XML Site map for the Crawler it helps the Bot to visit your site in short period of time i.e. google-bot took 14 min to crawl your site if you submit XML Sitemap else it will take 1373 min. so its very important to submit the Sitemap.
    Lets Talk about your Issue
as you mentioned in your discussion you have submit 250,000 but Crawl ( Indexed)only 25,000
    its may be because of
    1) When a search engine crawls your site and fails to index particular pages, you have a signal from the engines that those pages lack the necessary components for inclusion, be they architectural, link strength, content-related, etc.
    2) Your website Architecture may have some problem related with navigation.
    3) If a page lacks the link juice, internally or externally, or has content that engines wouldn't normally deem worthy of indexing, Sitemaps may overlook these weaknesses and include those pages in their indices.

    Suggesion

Create more than one Sitemap on the basis of Categories and then submit.
make some Changes into your website i.e. on structure / Architecture

Hi thanks for reply but doesn't really answer question.

Let me try to ask another way for clarity.

      1. What is difference between XML site map Indexed pages vs Google Index within Search Console?

I'm trying to understand difference between Indexed on Site Map vs Indexed withing Search console as to what difference between the 2 is and clarification on difference between why different numbers when seems to be same thing "Indexed"

Also question 3 from original post, if can answer that as well.

      Thanks

        Answer 1
XML Site map give the information (list of Links) which processed while generation of Sitemap (refers to how many URLs have been processed from the XML Sitemap), there may be chances to add more or less URL from your Website

The figure of "indexed URLs" given on the XML Sitemap page only refers to how many URLs have been processed from the XML Sitemap, and not the total number of indexed URLs.

I agree that if the XML Sitemap lists all your URLs, over a longer time the number of URLs indexed from the Sitemap should get closer to the total showing as indexed on the "Index Status" page or the number found by using the site:yourdomain.com search operator in Google.

        Google Index in Webmaster
when Crawler visit your site and Check for XML Site map if site map available then it will go through the sitemap and after that visit to overall website and Collect data.
This data will update into Google Database then reflects in Webmasters Google Index Section.(So this data varies each and every visit of Crawler).
This is the Difference between them.

It is possible that Googlebot finds from <a> links other URLs with content similar to the URLs from the sitemap and indexed them instead.
        so count of links varies.

        for 3 rd question
is it possible for you to post your website and Sitemap then exact issue will be clear.it would be easier to see what is happening !!!

I can only assume.. don't know exactly how your site is built... but I would assume your site dynamically builds pages. every time a page is viewed - it actually builds the page there will be a "?" in the URL followed by some amount of data. If 2 people look at the exact same page..there will actually be 2 separate URL's. GA is tracking the "separate" urls, even tho they are the "same page".

You can look up how to track dynamic sites in GA and correct some of the reporting issues.

    Hi,

So if xml site map has example 1000 pages submitted (includes category and product pages) and google search console (gwt) says 100 pages indexed from xml site map, but Webmasters Google Index Section says 5000 pages indexed, is it right to assume:

    A. 5000 pages indexed most likely includes 100 indexed pages as reported from xml site map

    B. Of the 1000 pages submitted from xml site map, but web masters google index section says 5000 indexed, these other 4000 pages can include pages not in the xml site map, pages like ?q=cat1, ?q=cat2, ?q=cat3&color=brown, etc. (Basically canonical pages of category pages with query parameter)

    Correct?

That's why you show more pages in webmasters google index section than what's submitted in xml site map due to canonical pages, but your main pages your hoping for to be in index from xml site map are not included hence 100 pages indexed from above example , right?
