In your daily SEO work, how many back links do you make/build using forums posts, discussions and the like.. do you see any developments immediately in your SERPS or PR? if so in how many days or weeks do you see the results?

Much depends on what you are doing. I recommend slow and steady. Often I will hear people say that news items will get 1,000 links a day and it helps them rank. Which reinforces my point.

If you are promoting a flash-in-the-pan page such as a recent event, then a natural link pattern would be vast numbers of links appearing overnight and slowly subsiding. But don't do it if you want to rank in the long haul.

I recommend creating several link campaigns using ezine articles, videos, hubpages, squidoo lenses, weebly and the like, in addition to bookmarks and blogger/wordpress type sites. All these point at your site. Then add in total 5 to 15 bookmarks directly to your site and also to these satellite sites. Do this constantly without stopping. As soon as you stop you will lose rank.

i totally agree with what was said above. Also, if you really don't want to do them yourself outsource it because the process is extremely dull!

I agree too, you'll want to definitely outsource those backlinks as much as you can. Get's a little boring =)

    I recommend slow and steady
slow and steady wins the race

I'll probably drop around 40-60 links this morning. 20 sites, I'm deep linking so 10 sites will backlink to 2 of my pages, and another 10 will link to 2 different pages, 4 different keywords, all of the pages are on the same site. Some of the sites I'm adding links to allow for links to be added in multiple places which is why the total backlink count will be higher.

I was expecting some crazy numbers from folks. I'd say 30 in a day for one site max for me.

Are you guys serious? You can hit the number spot with not many backlinks at all. Just get backlinks from high PR sites. I've done the whole social bookmarking and web 2.0 backlink wheels and nothing compares to the backlink power of just a simple article directory or a high PR blog. Have fun doing your 100's of backlinks per day while I just do 1-2 a day and rank higher than you.

Oh and massively submitting your site to social bookmark directories doesn't help, I've tested it plenty of times and I've never seen an improvement doing this. But go ahead and spend your $$$ on these services if you think it'll work. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Personally if it's a new site I will start out at 20 a day, but I've gone up as far as a hundred.

the day i publish new sites i start getting hundreds of links virally, I don't even think about google sandbox/penalty BS because there's no reason to think about it

google is out to index information and then show it to users, not penalize any site that got a few more links one day than they did another, come on be serious and logical about it
Ok lets look at this logical, its against the rules of google for you to build you own back links. If a new site which got indexed the same day it receives 100 back links, something is fishy.

You hear people asking, why have I dropped out of google? They were backlinking and google slapped them for it. The idea is not to pile on as many as you can because in the end google will slap you and say bye bye. 5-20 a day is a realistic number and that is why people build links like that.

If my advice goes a long with what most people are saying and most people tell people not to build 100's a day... You sure my advice is really that bad?

If you do what google wants your get ranked and stay ranked, so content + BL = ranking not a few articles and 500 BL a day.

Any chance you two can take your argument to PM? as not to pollute a quality thread?

Anyway, I have a question regarding this topic..
If I launch a new site, and it indexes to the #7 spot, and I build maybe 50 links a week to the site till it reaches a solid position, do I have to keep building links at that pace just to stay at my new position?
Or can I gradually bring them down to a more comfortable level as long a competition is not nipping at my heels?

OK easy fella. I sometimes have a bug in the rear and do roughly 150 in a day and then sometimes only 30. I've noticed it doesn't really matter as not all of them get indexed right away no matter what you do ie. put link in blogs, RSS feeds, bookmarking etc. I've never been penalized by submitting too many links manually and I don't think it is possible to submit too many manually. As for oscarkool, yes ranking for some long tailed keyword is crazy simple to do with zero links so I'm not impressed with your statement.

It's just as easy to rank for a short tail as well. If you guys still think link wheels are super effective, you are mistaken. 1,000 backlinks from bookmark directories isn't going to do anything to help you rank for a short keyword.
